Press release (in German)

In April 2020, the first book in German by the Syrian intellectual Yassin Al-Haj Saleh, »Freiheit: Heimat, Gefängnis, Exil und die Welt« (Freedom: Homeland, Prison, Exile and the World), was published in the Forum Transregional Studien’s publication series at Matthes & Seitz Berlin.
In his essay, Yassin Al-Haj Saleh reflects on freedom as change and as movement, and whether history, religion and the state can be deemed prisons. He sketches a utopia in human terms – of homes with open doors. Freedom, he writes, is escape, deviance, the possibility of return; freedom is risky. Yassin Al-Haj Saleh writes from his life experience in resistance to oppression, the experience of 16 years in the prisons of the Assad regime and his years of exile. His essay is a plea against parochialism and the exhaustion from explanations, for open homelands and a world within universal interest.
