Transregional studies pursue an open approach designed to promote the internationalization of the humanities and social sciences. They confront and connect different disciplinary and regional perspectives in research on common issues. Knowledge production usually takes place in national and regional knowledge systems, under different conditions, in various languages and is transmitted to diverse publics. Responding to increasing interdependence and specialization, transregional studies offer opportunities for collaboration between scholars with different regional/national/local perspectives and diverse disciplinary approaches to research and debate on shared questions.

The Forum’s communication formats intend to promote this approach. They are designed in such a way that they 1) reflect the open and inclusive character of transregional studies, 2) share and translate ideas and insights, and 3) allow the possibility to connect different approaches and perspectives on specific topics.

The Forum Transregionale Studien supports free and public access to research findings. It is a signatory of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. In order to benefit from digitization, the Forum develops new communication formats and encourages scholars to publish open access and make their research accessible to a broader public.
