Initiatives

The Forum develops and participates in initiatives that respond to new desiderata and challenges in the field of transregional research. Initiatives are usually institutional partnerships in which specific competencies and experiences are pooled and combined into a given project. Initiatives can lead to research programs or to medium to long-term cooperation. One initiative from 2015 was the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative that in 2016 developed into the research program Prisma Ukraïna - Research Network Eastern Europe. Another is the Academy in Exile, which was founded in 2017 together with the University of Duisburg-Essen and KWI Essen, and which is continued since 2023 at the TU Dortmund.

Since 2020, the Forum, together with six universities and research institutions from Germany and Tunisia, has participated in the founding and development of the Merian Centre for Advanced Studies in the Maghreb (MECAM) at Université de Tunis. In April 2021 the initiative Europäische Zeiten/European Times (EUTIM) started in cooperation with the universities in Frankfurt (Oder) and Potsdam.

Initiatives at the Forum

Europäische Zeiten / European Times – A Transregional Approach to the Societies of Central and Eastern Europe (EUTIM) focuses on narratives of time and space at the edges of Europe. Based on the experiences in the societies of Central and Eastern Europe, concepts such as “old”/“new” and “East”/“West” are analyzed with their temporal demarcations and localizations.
