Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,
»Das Forum Transregionale Studien eröffnet Freiräume für die Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern mit unterschiedlichen regionalen und disziplinären Perspektiven…«, so heißt es in unserer Selbstbeschreibung. In Zeiten schrumpfender bürgerlicher und akademischer Freiheiten erhält das Versprechen des »Freiraums« eine veränderte Bedeutung. Viele der KollegInnen im Nahen Osten, aber auch in Osteuropa und anderen Regionen engagieren sich in beispielhafter Weise für Freiheit und Pluralismus in ihren Gesellschaften, oft um den Preis von Ausgrenzung und Exil.
Es freut uns deshalb besonders, dass Hilal Alkan, derzeit Fellow unseres Forschungsprogramms Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europa (EUME), am 22. Juni in Anwesenheit von Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier den Voltaire-Preis für Toleranz, Völkerverständigung und Respekt vor Differenz der Friede Springer Stiftung erhalten wird. Die Politikwissenschaftlerin beschäftigt sich in ihrem Forschungsprojekt mit dem Zusammenhang von Disziplinierung und Fürsorge im Umgang mit syrischen Flüchtlingen und gehört zu der Gruppe der
»Academics for Peace«.
Mit diesem Newsletter erhalten Sie die Ausschreibung von 5 EUME-Fellowships für das akademische Jahr 2017/2018. Zudem schreibt das Forum sein Irmgard-Coninx-Preis-Fellowship in diesem Jahr für eine/n »scholar at risk« aus.
Die Auswirkungen der Revolutionen und die Transformationsprozesse im Nahen Osten sind seit Jahren inhaltliche Schwerpunkte unseres EUME-Programms und werden in seinen Akademien, Seminaren und Workshops thematisiert. Viele der Beiträge sind als Audiomitschnitte verfügbar, so etwa Hilal Alkans Seminarvortrag zum Thema »The Politics of Gender and Ethnicity in Turkey«. Mit der Kulturpolitik autoritärer und populistischer Bewegungen befasst sich ein Workshop, der von dem St. Petersburger Literaturwissenschaftler Ilya Kalinin geleitet wird und im Rahmen des Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe stattfinden wird.
Im August thematisiert die Transregionale Akademie »Redistribution and the Law in an Antagonistic World« in Berlin die Rolle des Rechts in transnationalen Verteilungskonflikten um öffentliche Güter und Lasten. Wenig später diskutieren KunsthistorikerInnen im Rahmen der Akademie »Mobility: Objects, Materials, Concepts, Actors« in Buenos Aires Konzeptionen und Narrative von Mobilität und Kulturaustausch auch im Hinblick auf Grenzziehungen und »blinde Flecken«. Die Akademie wird gemeinsam von unserem Forschungsprogramm Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices, dem Deutschen Forum Kunstgeschichte, Paris und weiteren Partnern aus Frankreich, Brasilien und Argentinien getragen.
Erschienen ist zuletzt die zweite Ausgabe der wissenschaftlichen Zeitschrift Philological Encounters, die aus dem Zukunftsphilologie-Programm hervorgegangen ist. Die neue Ausgabe widmet sich dem Thema »Lingua Franca: Towards a Philology of the Sea«. Sheldon Pollocks Jahresvortrag Philologie und Freiheit von 2013 ist nun als Open-Access-Publikation auf perspectivia.net verfügbar, in Kürze auch der EUME-Band Commitment and Beyond: Reflections on/of the Political in Arabic Literature since the 1940s.

Dear readers,
“The Forum Transregionale Studien opens up space for cooperation among scholars and scientists with different regional and disciplinary perspectives,” as our self-description says. In times of shrinking civil liberties and academic freedom, the promise of “open space” takes on a changed meaning. Many of our colleagues in the Middle East, but also in Eastern Europe and other regions, are engaged in an admirable way for freedom and pluralism in their societies, often at the risk of punishment, exclusion and exile.
That’s why we are especially pleased that Hilal Alkan, currently a Fellow of our research program Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe (EUME), will receive the Voltaire Award for Tolerance, Intercultural Communication and Respect for Difference, awarded by the Friede Springer Foundation, on June 22 in the presence of Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. In her research project, this political scientist is investigating the connection between disciplining and assistance in dealing with Syrian refugees. She belongs to the group “Academics for Peace”.
With this newsletter, you receive the call for applications for 5 EUME Fellowships for the 2017/2018 academic year. The Forum also calls for submissions for its Irmgard Coninx Prize Fellowship, this year for a “scholar at risk”.
The effects of the revolutions and transformation processes in the Middle East have been the substantive emphases of our EUME program and the themes of our academies, seminars, and workshops for years. Many of the contributions are available as audio recordings, for example Hilal Alkan’s seminar lecture on the topic of “The Politics of Gender and Ethnicity in Turkey”. The St. Petersburg literary scholar Ilya Kalinin will head a workshop on the cultural policies of authoritarian and populist movements. The workshop will be held in the framework of Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe.
In August, the Transregional Academy “Redistribution and the Law in an Antagonistic World” in Berlin will address the role of law in transnational distributional conflicts over public goods and burdens. Soon thereafter, art historians will discuss concepts and narratives of mobility and cultural exchange, also in connection with boundary-setting and “blind spots”, in the framework of the Academy “Mobility: Objects, Materials, Concepts, Actors” in Buenos Aires. This Academy is supported by our research program Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices, the Deutsches Forum Kunstgeschichte, Paris, and other partners from France, Brazil, and Argentina.
The second issue of the scholarly journal Philological Encounters, out of which the Zukunftsphilologie program emerged, recently appeared. The new issue is devoted to the topic “Lingua Franca: Towards a Philology of the Sea”. Sheldon Pollock’s annual lecture from 2013, Philologie und Freiheit (philology and freedom), 2013 is now available as an open-access publication on perspectivia.net; soon the EUME volume Commitment and Beyond: Reflections on/of the Political in Arabic Literature since the 1940s will also appear there.

Ideenwettbewerb / Open Call
Im Rahmen des Ideenwettbewerbs 2018 hat das Forum in Kooperation mit der Max Weber Stiftung zwei Explorative Workshops ausgeschrieben. Dieses Format gibt Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler die Gelegenheit, institutionen- und disziplinübergreifend an gemeinsamen Themen zu arbeiten. Die Ausschreibung endete am 26.03.2017. Aus der vorangegangenen Ausschreibung hervorgegangene Projektideen werden in den beiden folgenden Veranstaltungen erprobt:
The Forum had an open call for two Explorative Workshops, which are to be held until March 2018. With this format the Forum and its cooperation partner, the Max Weber Stiftung, create possibilities for researchers to work transdisciplinarily on common themes across institutions. »Mediterranean Perspectives in School History Teaching«

Der Workshop wird von Romain Faure (FU Berlin) und Leyla Dakhli (Centre Marc Bloch) kuratiert und beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie die Verflechtungen und Konflikte im Mittelmeerraum im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert eine stärkere Beachtung in den Schulbüchern seiner Anrainerstaaten finden kann. Ziel ist es, ein mediterranes Netzwerk von HistorikerInnen und GeschichtslehrerInnen zu begründen.
Diese Veranstaltung ist als geschlossenes Arbeitsseminar geplant und aus dem gemeinsamen Ideenwettbewerb der Max Weber Stiftung und des Forums hervorgegangen.
The workshop is convened by Romain Faure (FU Berlin) and Leyla Dakhli (Centre Marc Bloch) and will be held at the Forum Transregionale Studien. It will discuss how entanglements and conflicts in the Mediterranean in the 19th and 20th centuries could be reflected in school books in countries around the Mediterranean area. The workshop aims at laying the ground for an international historians’ and history teachers’ network seeking to infuse Mediterranean perspectives into history teaching. The event is a result of the last year’s open call for Explorative Workshops by the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Stiftung. Please note that this is a closed event.

»Redistribution and the Law in an Antagonistic World«

Die Akademie wird von Philipp Dann (HU Berlin), Isabel Feichtner (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) und Jochen von Bernstorff (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen) organisiert. Die Akademie soll den Auftakt zu einem größeren Projekt bilden, in dem die Rolle des Rechts in der Entstehung, Bearbeitung und Bewertung von Verteilungskonflikten in transdisziplinärer und globaler Perspektive untersucht werden soll. Während der Akademie werden bis zu 30 DoktorandInnen und Postdocs aus mehreren Weltregionen ihre laufenden Forschungsarbeiten und ihre Ansichten auf die Rolle des Rechts in Verteilungskonflikten debattieren.
The academy is convened by Philipp Dann (HU Berlin), Isabel Feichtner (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) and Jochen von Bernstorff (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen). The academy aims to provide a forum for scholars from law and other disciplines who investigate the distributive effects of law and explore avenues for the re-design of legal institutions to achieve more equitable distributions. The academy seeks to be a venue for scholars interested in collaborative research on law and global distribution conflicts to connect with like-minded peers around the globe.

»Reading War through History: (Central) European Perspectives on the Ukraine Crisis«

Die Auflösung der Sowjetunion und Jugoslawiens, die EU-Osterweiterung, die "Ukraine-Krise" und der Krieg im Donbass wurden mit historischen Argumenten interpretiert und legitimiert. Seit jeher spielen Geschichte und Erinnerung eine zentrale Rolle in der öffentlichen Debatte und für politische Macht. Die Tagung diskutiert diese Thematik aus transregionaler Perspektive am Beispiel der Ukraine.
In Kooperation mit der Deutsch-Ukrainischen Historikerkommission, dem Deutschen Historischen Institut Warschau und der Deutschen Botschaft Warschau und kuratiert von Andrii Portnov (Prisma Ukraïna) und Miloš Řezník (DHI Warschau).
The dissolution of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, the enlargement of the EU, the “Ukraine Crisis” and war in Donbas were interpreted and legitimized with historical arguments. History and memory constantly appear in the center of public debate and power struggles. The conference aims at analyzing those phenomena from a transregional perspective, using the Ukrainian case as a focus to be studied in comparative and entangled frame.
In cooperation with the German-Ukrainian Historical Commission, German Historical Institute Warsaw and the German Embassy in Warsaw and curated by Andrii Portnov (Prisma Ukraïna) and Miloš Řezník (DHI Warschau).

Wir freuen uns, sie begrüßen zu dürfen. / Silvia von Steinsdorff is welcomed as the newest member to the collegium of “Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe” that was launched in October 2016.
Alexandr Osipian wird vom 27.04.-11.06.2017 als Visiting Fellow in Berlin zu Gast sein. Er ist Professor für Geschichte am Kramatorsk Institut für Wirtschaft und Geisteswissenschaften und Research Fellow an der Nationalen Taras Shevchenko Universität Kyiv. Er wird zum Thema »Uses of History in Ukrainian Politics: Memory and Identity in the Insurgency in Donbas in 2014« forschen. / Alexandr Osipian, Associate Professor of History at Kramatorsk Institute of Economics and Humanities and Research Fellow at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, will be in Berlin for a Visiting Fellowship from 27 April to 11 June 2017. He will work on his project “Uses of History in Ukrainian Politics: Memory and Identity in the Insurgency in Donbas in 2014”.

Dieser Workshop beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie MalerInnen, DichterInnen, HistorikerInnen und Intellektuelle sich im Süd-Asien der beginnenden Moderne – im langen 18. Jahrhundert – Landschaft und Stadtplanung vorgestellt haben.

Ahmed Adam (Art Histories Fellow 2015/16) ist zum Direktor des neu gegründeten Universitätsmuseum in Khartoum ernannt worden. In diesem neuen Museum werden u.a. das Naturkundemuseum, Museum für Archäologie, Geologie und das Museum der Medizinischen Fakultät vereint. Als Direktor wird er eng mit der Universität und dort dem Fachbereich Archäologie zusammenarbeiten.
Hannah Baader wird im Sommersemester als Visiting Scholar am Exzellenzcluster »Asia and Europe« in Heidelberg zwei Seminare unterrichten. Dies dient der weiteren Vernetzung zwischen dem Schwerpunkt einer globalen Kunstgeschichte, den sich die Universität Heidelberg als auch das Forum gesetzt haben.
Federico Buccellati (Art Histories Fellow 2015/16) wurde von der National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) und der Andrew W. Mellon Foundation für ein Fellowship in Digital Humanities am Alexandria Archive Institute ausgewählt. Zudem wird er ab 2018 für drei Jahre eine von der DFG geförderte Stelle am Institut für Vorderasiatische Archäologie an der Freien Universität antreten.
Monica Juneja, Inhaberin des Chair for Global Art History an der Universität Heidelberg, ist im Sommersemester Senior Visiting Scholar des Art-Histories-Programms am Forum in Berlin.
Subhashini Kaligotla (CAHIM Fellow; Art Histories Fellow 2015/16) wurde ab Herbst 2018 als Assistant Professor ans Art History Department der Yale University berufen. Ihr erster Gedichtband gewann den »(Great) Indian Poetry Collective’s Emerging Poets Prize« und wird 2018 in den USA veröffentlicht.
Combiz Moussavi Aghdam (University of Art, Teheran) wird den zweiten Teil seines Short-Term-Fellowships in der Zeit von Juni bis Juli 2017 in Berlin verbringen. Er widmet sich dem Thema »Iranian Art in the 1960s: An Alternative Modernism?«

Ahmed Adam (Art Histories Fellow 2015/16) was appointed director of the newly founded university museum in Khartoum. This museum unites the museums for natural history, archaeology, geology, and the museum of the medical school. As director he will work closely together with the university and its archaeology department.
Hannah Baader will be teaching two seminars as a visiting scholar during the summer term at the Cluster of Excellence at the University of Heidelberg. In that way further networking in termns of global art history will be continued and broadened between the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe” and the Forum Transregionale Studien.

EUME BERLINER SEMINAR
Unter dem Oberthema »Re/Visions« wird das EUME Berliner Seminar im Sommersemester 2017 in den Räumen des Forums und an verschiedenen Instituten in der Stadt fortgesetzt.
Im Fokus der einzelnen Seminarsitzungen stehen Revisionen und neue Ansichten auf grundlegende Fragen des Verhältnisses von Exil und Kultur, Historiographie und Zukunft, Recht und Politik sowie Sexualität/Geschlecht und Religion zwischen Europa und dem Nahen Osten.
Das Seminar begann am 19. April 2017 mit der Diskussion »Words in/of Exile: Syrian Cultural Practices in Berlin« und einem Gespräch dreier syrischer Kulturschaffender, die derzeit in Berlin leben, Talal Derki, Mohammad Attar und Rasha Abbas, mit Khaled Saghieh (Beirut; EUME-Fellow 2016/17).
With the start of the summer term 2017, the EUME Berliner Seminar has been continued in changing locations of the city. Under the theme “Re/Visions”, re-readings and new interpretations of historic events and their importance for current developments, as well as questions of cultural production in the context of politically fragile situations in countries like Syria or Turkey, will be discussed.
The seminar series started on April 19, 2017 with a conversation on “Words in/of Exile: Syrian Cultural Practices in Berlin” of three Syrians currently living in Berlin, the film director Talal Derki, the dramatist Mohammad Attar and the writer Rasha Abbas, chaired by Khaled Saghieh (Beirut; EUME Fellow 2016/17).

»Reading the ‘1979 Moment’ in the Middle East«

Der Workshop thematisiert den 1979-Moment, der den Niedergang der Linken und den Aufstieg islamistischer politischer Bewegungen einleitete, als Wendepunkt kultureller und intellektueller Entwicklungen im Nahen Osten.
Der Workshop wird von Amir Moosavi (EUME Fellow 2016/17) kuratiert, aus Mitteln seines Volkswagen Stiftung/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-Stipendiums finanziert und in Kooperation mit dem Forschungsnetzwerk »Figures of Thought | Turning Points. Cultural Practices and Social Change in the Arab World« des Centrums für Nah- und Mitteloststudien der Philipps-Universität Marburg arrangiert.
The workshop addresses the cultural and intellectual reactions and changes surrounding the decline of leftist and the rise of Islamist political movements in the Middle East that occurred in and around the year 1979. The workshop is convened by Amir Moosavi (EUME Fellow of the Volkswagen Stiftung/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation 2016/17), held in cooperation with the research project “Figures of Thought | Turning Points. Cultural Practices and Social Change in the Arab World” of the Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies at Philipps-University Marburg.

In Kooperation mit dem ICI Berlin und organisiert von drei ehemaligen und aktuellen Fellows des Forums Transregionale Studien, Saima Akhtar, Walid El-Houri und Banu Karaca. Der Workshop dient der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Produktion und Konzeption von Bildern des gegenwärtigen Nahen Ostens und thematisiert Formen der (Selbst-)Orientalisierung.
In cooperation with the ICI Berlin and organized by three former and current Fellows of the Forum Transregionale Studien, Saima Akhtar, Walid El-Houri and Banu Karaca. The workshop examines the continued seductiveness that orientalism seems to hold over the production of images of the contemporary Middle East, both inside and outside of the region.

EUME setzt seine Kooperation mit dem Verein Mayadin Al-Tahrir in Form einer gemeinsamen Filmreihe fort. »Beyond Spring« zeigt und diskutiert die Filme Diaries of a Flying Dog von Bassem Fayad am 11. Mai und Houses Without Doors von Avo Kaprealian am 8. Juni 2017.
Die Vorführungen beginnen jeweils um 20:00 Uhr in der Werkstatt der Kulturen (Wissmannstr. 32, 12049 Berlin) und werden anschließend von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus dem Umfeld von EUME diskutiert.

EUME continues its cooperation with the association Mayadin Al-Tahrir in the form of the joint film series “Beyond Spring”. The film Diaries of a Flying Dog by Bassem Fayad will be shown on 11 May and the documentary Houses Without Doors by Avo Kaprealian on 8 June 2017.
Screenings begin at 8 pm at the Werkstatt der Kulturen (Wissmannstraße 32, 12049 Berlin) and will be discussed by researchers related with EUME.

»What was Philology in Arabic? Arabic-Islamic Textual Practices in the Early Modern World«
13.-15. Juli 2017 an der Freien Universität Berlin
Die internationale Konferenz beleuchtet die vernachlässigte Geschichte textueller Praxen in der frühmodernen arabisch-islamischen Welt (1500-1900) aus einer globalen und vergleichenden Perspektive. Sie wird sich auf textkritische Praxen, das Wachsen und die Entwicklung von Texten und die arabische Cosmopolis konzentrieren. Hierbei werden arabische textuelle Praxen als Weltphilologie aufgefasst.
This International Conference will investigate the neglected history of textual practices in the early modern Arabic-Islamic world (1500-1900) from a global and comparative perspective. It will focus on text critical practices, the growth and evolution of texts and the Arabic Cosmopolis by considering Arabic textual practices as world philology.

Der zweite Band der double-blind peer-reviewed Zeitschrift Philological Encounters ist seit Anfang 2017 mit dem Titel »Lingua Franca: Towards a Philology of the Sea« veröffentlicht. Sie wurde von Michael Allan (University of Oregon) und Elisabetta Benigni (Università degli Studi di Torino) herausgegeben.
Mit einem Fokus auf die Mittelmeerregion untersuchen die zehn Beiträge Texte hinsichtlich ihres Mittelmeerkontextes und der Möglichkeiten, die sich daraus für die sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse ergeben. Die Einleitung von Michael Allan und Elisabetta Benigni und alle anderen Beiträge finden Sie hier.
Philological Encounters kann von Privatpersonen bis 31. Dezember 2018 kostenlos gelesen werden.
The second volume of the double-blind peer-reviewed journal Philological Encounters was published in the beginning of 2017 under the title “Lingua Franca: Towards a Philology of the Sea”, edited by Michael Allan (University of Oregon) and Elisabetta Benigni (Università degli Studi di Torino).
Focusing on the Mediterranean world the ten articles in “Lingua Franca” question specific texts in terms of what they tell us about the possibility of a Mediterranean context for philological and literary analysis. You will find Michael Allan’s and Elisabetta Benigni’s introduction and all the articles here.

Trafo – Blog for Transregional Research
Im Februar 2017 wurde auf dem TRAFO-Blog die Reihe »Emerging Topics« begonnen. Sie bietet WissenschaftlerInnen die Möglichkeit, anstehende Workshops und Konferenzen mit transregionalen Bezügen zu präsentieren. Kürzlich hat hier etwa der Archäologe Willam Carruthers (Deutsches Historisches Institut in London) die Konferenz »Heritage, Decolonisation and the Field« (London, 25./26.1.2018) vorgestellt.
Ab Mai wird die Dokumentation der Veranstaltung »Negotiating Heritage. Making, Sustaining, Breaking, Sharing« über das TRAFO-Blog laufen, die das Forum am 24.4.2017 gemeinsam mit der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut, der Max Weber Stiftung und dem Heidelberger Cluster »Asia and Europe« im Berliner Bode-Museum veranstaltet hat.
