Professionalisation of History Writing and Archive Making in Twentieth Century Beirut

Hana Sleiman (U of Cambridge / EUME Fellow 2022), Chair: Refqa Abu-Remaileh (Freie Universität Berlin / EUME Fellow)

Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14, 14193 Berlin

The talk explores the symbiotic and gendered development of the professions of history writing and archive building in twentieth century Beirut. It recounts the development of the city’s historiographic ecosystem, tracing how men and women moved through the physical space of the archive and the metaphorical space of historiography. In doing so, it begins to chart a history of historiography that goes beyond the study of historians and their oeuvre, encompassing sites such as homes, archivists’ desks and higher education curricula.

Hana Sleiman is an archivist and a historian of the modern Middle East whose research focuses on intellectual history, histories of print and archive theory. She is a Research Fellow at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow at EUME Berlin.
