The migration of images as an exchange of cultures can result in a complete transformation of their aesthetics and content. What is an image before and what is it afterwards, when context and function change fundamentally? Based on Aby Warburg’s leading concept of the migration of images, Hans Belting will analyze different examples of art from China, the Middle East and Europe from the 15th-17th century. How can we describe the work of a Muslim artist who translated the Chinese original “bird-and-flower” motive, against its former meaning, into a narrative? Which role plays the oeuvre of Gentile Bellini and the transformation of some of his works at the Ottoman Court in 1480/81?

Hans Belting was a founding member of the Karlsruhe University of Art and Design (Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung) in 1992, where he built up a new curriculum for art history and media theory. He inaugurated the Graduiertenkolleg “Image; Medium; Body” and continued directing the program after his retirement in 2002. In 1995, he spent one year as Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Studies). From 2004 to 2007, he was Director of the “International Center for Cultural Science”(IFK) in Vienna. He inaugurated the ongoing research project “Global Art and the Museum” (now: “Global Studies”) at the International Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe in 2007.
