Threats to Academic Freedom — A Comment
The Digital Threat to Science and Academic Freedom
Academic freedom is under threat today in many places of the world and it is urgent to create spaces of collective reflection on a principle that is fundamental to all intellectual practice. Together with colleagues from around the world, we organized a workshop at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin to serve as a forum for such reflections. It was held on October 21 and 22, 2020. In the coming weeks, many of the contributions to the workshop will be published on this blog; other events and contributions will follow.
The series “Academic Freedom” fosters scholarly and intellectual exchange on questions of academic freedom and freedom of thought in Europe and across the world. It publishes research papers, reports, talks, and thought pieces on academic freedom. The series is curated and edited by former Fellows of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. It underlines the commitment of this Institute for Advanced Study to free research, thought, and artistic creation that has been part of its mission ever since its foundation. The series welcomes contributions (of up to 7,000 characters); all contributions will be submitted to the editorial team for approval and revision.
