KuK-Tuesdays: Dislocation and Temporalities

The inaugural session of the new edition of the KuK-Tuesdays: Dislocation series aims to engage with the concept of temporalities, in relation to dislocation. The term dislocation starts with the prefix “dis”. This affix indicates that the term refers to the absence of location, the opposite of location, or being deprived of being located, and the “not” located. The act of being pushed out of place manifests as a moment of anomaly, rupture, irritation, interruption, and violence.

The phenomena of trafficking of objects and the forced migration of humans represent dislocatory events that intertwine displacement with processes of transformation. These events are inherently tied to the experience of being uprooted—resulting in states of injury. Witnessing such times of disjunction prompts to revisit the phrase “the time is out of joint” (Hamlet, Shakespeare) as a conceptual framework for developing a nuanced thinking of (national) borders, as well as a redefined interpretation of the concepts of home. This raises critical questions about the conditions and temporalities under which objects and individuals may be considered at home or dislocated.

We want to inquire into how these dislocatory moments are archived and articulated, exploring who engages in this process and for what purposes. How to challenge the prevailing narratives in order to approach the voices of those who were negated their rights by the dominant discourses? This inquiry is especially relevant at this moment of time marked by uprisings and armed conflicts in the Global South, coupled with the alarming rise of right-wing political movements. For our conversation on temporalities and dislocation we have invited three guests: Banu Karaca, the Research Group Leader of the ERC project BEYONDREST; Ahmed Adam, Associate Professor of Archaeology at the University of Khartoum; Gal Kirn, a Berlin-based researcher and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.

The events are free of charge, and the discussions will be held in English. Following each session, participants are invited to join an informal reception to further the conversation.

The sessions are recorded and will be published. By attending, you agree to potentially be recorded for this publication.
