Sommerakademien / Summer Academies

Jährlich richtet sich das Forum internationale Sommer-  bzw. Winterakademien aus, die der Profilierung transregionaler Forschung dienen. Sie greifen innovative Fragestellungen auf, erproben und schärfen sie in einem internationalen Kontext. Die diesjährigen Sommerakademien finden in Rabat und Beirut statt, eine Winterakademie zum Thema „Inequality, Education and Social Power“ in Berlin ist in Vorbereitung.

The Forum annually organizes international Summer and Winter Academies intended to raise the profile of transregional research. They take up, discuss, and enhance innovative questions in an international context. This year’s Summer Academies will take place in Rabat and Beirut; the Winter Academy about “Inequality, Education and Social Power” in Berlin is in preparation.

Summer Academy »Conflict and Mobility in the City: Urban Space, Youth and Social Transformations« from 25 Aug till 05 Sep 2014 at the École de Gouvernance et d’Économie in Rabat. Closing date: 31 March 2014.

Irmgard Coninx Prize for Transregional Studies

In diesem Jahr schreibt das Forum Transregionale Studien zusammen mit der Irmgard Coninx Stiftung erstmals einen gemeinsamen Forschungspreis aus. Der Preis wird für ein Forschungsprojekt ausgelobt, das in exemplarischer Weise disziplinäres und regionalspezifisches Wissen verbindet. Die Gewinnerin/Der Gewinner erhält ein Forschungsstipendium von bis zu zehn Monaten in Berlin und wird in die Aktivitäten des Forum Transregionale Studien eingebunden. Nähere Informationen zur Ausschreibung sind in Kürze über die Homepage des Forums zu finden. 

In 2014, the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Imgard Coninx Foundation are issuing a call for the first time for applications for the Irmard Coninx Prize for Transregional Studies. The Prize is awarded for a research project that relates disciplinary and area-based knowledge in an exemplary way. The prize consists of a research fellowship of up to ten month and the possibility to participate in the scholarly activities of the Forum in Berlin.

Soziale Medien / Social Media

Anlässlich unserer letzten Jahreskonferenz »Areas and Disciplines« haben wir das wissenschaftliche Blog Trafo – Beiträge zur Transregionalen Forschung mitbegründet. Es bietet eine Plattform, auf der aktuelle empirische und theoretische Forschungsergebnisse, Berichte, Interviews und Tagungsankündigungen präsentiert werden. Seit einigen Wochen sind wir zudem neben Twitter auch über eine eigene Facebook-Seite aktiv und laden zur weiteren Vernetzung ein.

On the occasion of our last Annual Conference »Areas and Disciplines«, we co-founded the scientific blog Trafo – Beiträge zur Transregionalen Forschung. It offers a platform presenting current empirical and theoretical research results, reports, interviews, and conference announcements. We have also been active on Twitter and Facebook for some weeks and invite you to follow us.

Colloquium

Das Colloquium des Forum Transregionale Studien, das etwa sechsmal jährlich stattfindet, eröffnet einen Gesprächsraum für den Austausch zu theoretischen und methodischen Fragestellungen transregionaler Forschung. Es steht den Mitgliedern des Forums, den Fellows der Programme sowie einschlägig arbeitenden WissenschaftlerInnen offen.

Das nächste Colloquium findet am Montag, 3. März 2014, von 16-18 Uhr statt und wird von dem Forschungsprogramm Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices gestaltet. Unter dem Titel »Ekphrasis and Description« werden in mehreren Einzelvorträgen Überlegungen zum Verhältnis von Sprache und künstlerischem Artefakt unter transregionaler Perspektive diskutiert werden.

Am Freitag, 4. April 2014 von 12-14 Uhr, spricht Prof. Dr. Matthias Middell (Centre for Area Studies, Leipzig) im Colloquium zu »Global History and Transregional Studies«. Er wird dabei erläutern, inwiefern die zunehmende transregionale Vernetzung für regionalwissenschaftliche Forschung und Lehre Herausforderung und Chance zugleich ist.

The Colloquium, meeting about six times a year, is designed to open a discursive space for the ongoing scholarly exchange on overarching theoretical and methodological questions of transregional research. Fellows of the programs as well as researchers from the Forum’s member institutions and other transregional scholars in Berlin participate in the Colloquium.

The next Colloquium takes place on Monday, 3 March 2014, 4-6 p.m. and will be organized by our research program Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices. Under the title »Ekphrasis and Description«, there will be several talks discussing the relation between language and artistic artifacts from a transregional perspective.

Prof. Dr. Matthias Middell (Centre for Area Studies, Leipzig) will give a talk on »Global History and Transregional Studies« in the Colloquium on Friday, 4 April 2014, noon-2 p.m. He will illustrate how the increasing transregional interconnectedness can be both a challenge and an opportunity for research initiatives and curricula in regional studies.

WeberWorldCafé

»Bürger, Blogger, Botschafter: neue Medien und Akteure in der Diplomatie des 21. Jahrhunderts«: Am 28. April 2014 laden die Max Weber Stiftung und das Forum zum ersten WeberWorldCafé nach Bonn ein. Bei dieser Veranstaltung werden in einem dynamischen Gesprächsprozess mit ExpertInnen Wissen und Ideen aller Beteiligten gesammelt und diskutiert.

Dieses WeberWorldCafé konzentriert sich auf die Frage, ob die neuen Medien tatsächlich mehr politische Partizipation ermöglichen und inwiefern sich die diplomatische Bühne und seine Akteure durch das Web 2.0 verändert hat. Es wendet sich an StudentInnen der Politik- und Geschichtswissenschaften und findet in englischer Sprache statt.

“Citizens, Bloggers, Ambassadors: New Media and Actors of Diplomacy in the 21st Century”: The Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Stiftung invite you to the first WeberWorldCafé in Bonn on 28 April 2014. Knowledge and ideas are discussed and collected in a dynamic process during a discussion with experts and roundtable hosts.

This WeberWorldCafé will focus on the question whether new media can really enable increased political participation and how the Web 2.0 has changed the diplomatic stage and its actors. It addresses students of political science and history and will be conducted in English.

Programme / Programs

In den Forschungsprogrammen Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europa (EUME) und Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices werden derzeit die Bewerbungen für den Jahrgang 2014/2015 ausgewertet. Wir freuen uns über insgesamt rund 370 BewerberInnen für die ausgeschriebenen 20 Post-Doc-Stipendien.

Die von Rechtskulturen: Konfrontationen jenseits des Vergleichs initiierte Übersetzung der Empfehlungen des Wissenschaftsrats zur Rechtswissenschaft (»Prospects of Legal Scholarship in Germany: Current Situation, Analyses and Recommendations«), die am 2. Oktober 2013 als offizielles Dokument des Wissenschaftsrats erschienen ist, ist derzeit Gegenstand eines lebhaften, virtuellen Symposiums auf dem Verfassungsblog. Beiträge und Kommentare von Virgilio Afonso da Silva, Anne Griffiths, Jan Klabbers, Christopher McCrudden, Michaela Hailbronner, Robert Howse, Ralf Michaels, Russell Miller u.a. verknüpfen die deutsche Diskussion um die Reform der Juristenausbildung mit dynamischen Reformdebatten in anderen Teilen der Welt.

Das Programm Zukunftsphilologie: Revisiting the Canons of Textual Scholarship und das Leiden University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (LUCIS) organisieren in Kooperation mit der Universitätsbibliothek Leiden eine Konferenz mit dem Titel »Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Philological Encounters«. Sie wird vom 4. bis 5. Juni 2014 an der Universität Leiden stattfinden.

Das Forschungsprojekt Global Prayers: Befreiung und Erlösung in der Stadt ist Ende 2013 nach dreijähriger Laufzeit als Forschungsprogramm am Forum Transregionale Studien ausgelaufen. Die Arbeitsergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes werden u.a. in dem Band »Global Prayers. Contemporary Manifestations of the Religious in the City«, Zürich 2013, dokumentiert.

Currently, the programs Europe In The Middle East—The Middle East In Europe (EUME) and Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices are evaluating the applications for the academic year 2014/2015. We are very happy to have received 370 applications for 20 postdoctoral grants.

The English translation of the German Council for Science and Humanities’ recommendations “Prospects of Legal Scholarship in Germany: Current Situation, Analyses and Recommendations” (initiated by Rechtskulturen and published on 2 October 2013 as an official document of the Council) is currently the subject of a lively virtual symposium on Verfassungsblog. Contributions and commentaries by Virgilio Afonso da Silva, Anne Griffiths, Jan Klabbers, Christopher McCrudden, Michaela Hailbronner, Robert Howse, Ralf Michaels, Russell Miller, and other legal scholars link the German discussion on the reform of legal research and education to dynamic reform debates in other parts of the world.

The Forum’s research program Global Prayers: Redemption and Liberation in the City expired in December 2013 after a runtime of three years. The working results are documented in the volume »Global Prayers. Contemporary Manifestations of the Religious in the City«, Zurich 2013.
