Editorial
Im akademischen Jahr 2017/18 werden 24 WissenschaftlerInnen aus 14 Ländern im Rahmen der Forschungsprogramme des Forums in Berlin leben und arbeiten. Wir heißen unsere neuen Fellows herzlich willkommen und freuen uns auf die Diskussionen über die Neubewertung der sowjetischen oder iranischen Avantgarde, die politische Theologie der arabischen postkolonialen Ordnung oder über neue und alte Grenzziehungen zwischen und in den Gesellschaften des Nahen Ostens, Ost- und Westeuropa.
Wir gratulieren Refqa Abu-Remaileh (EUME Fellow 2012/13, 2014-18) zu ihremERC Starting Grant, mit dem sieihr Projekt »Country of Words: Reading and Reception of Palestinian Literature from 1948 to the Present« an der Freien Universität Berlin (Presseerklärung) realisieren kann.
Im Rahmen der Philipp-Schwartz-Initiative hat das Forum Transregionale Studien die Möglichkeit erhalten, ein Stipendium an einen gefährdeten Wissenschaftler oder eine gefährdete Wissenschaftlerin zu vergeben. Damit kann das Forum seine Unterstützung für gefährdete Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler ausbauen.
Mit der Gründung einer »Akademie im Exil« engagiert sich das Forum gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Turkistik der Universität Duisburg-Essenund dem Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut in Essen in einer neuen Initiative, die von der VolkswagenStiftung gefördert und an zunächst zwei Standorten aufgebaut wird. Die Akademie soll WissenschaftlerInnen aus dem Umfeld der »Academics for Peace« aus der Türkei eine Plattform bieten, um ihre Arbeit im Exil fortzusetzen und ein wissenschaftliches Programm kritischer Türkeistudien mitzugestalten. Die Akademie soll es nicht nur ermöglichen, die Grundlagen pluraler und demokratischer Gesellschaften und autoritärer Ideologien und Praxis zu erforschen und zu debattieren, sondern strebt auch an, die Türkei-bezogene Forschung in Deutschland zu beleben. Eine Ausschreibung für Fellowships erfolgt in Kürze.
Wir laden Sie herzlich zu allen Aktivitäten des Forums ein, von denen wir einige im Folgenden vorstellen werden. Insbesondere hinweisen möchte ich Sie auf die gemeinsame Jahrestagung des Forums und der Max Weber Stiftung zum Thema »Chronologics: Periodisierung in einem globalen Kontext«, die vom 7. bis 9. Dezember im Maison de France in Berlin stattfindet.

Dear readers,
24 researchers from 14 countries will live and work in Berlin in the framework of the Forum’s research programs in the academic year 2017/18. We welcome our new Fellows and look forward to the discussions on the Soviet or Iranian avant-garde, the political theology of the Arab postcolonial order, or new and old demarcations in and between the societies in the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe.
Congratulations to Refqa Abu-Remaileh (EUME Fellow 2012/13, 2014-18), who received an ERC Starting Grant. The funding of the European Research Council (ERC) for early-career researchers gives her the opportunity to work on her research project “Country of Words: Reading and Reception of Palestinian Literature from 1948 to the Present”.
In the framework of the Philip-Schwartz-Initiative, the Forum Transregionale Studien had the opportunity to give a fellowship to a scholar at risk. In that way the Forum can build up its support for scholars at risk.
The Forum, together with the Institute for Turkish Studies at the Universität Duisburg-Essen and the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut in Essen, have founded the “Academy in Exile”, an initiative that is supported by the VolkswagenStiftung and will be established in two locations. The Academy will offer researchers from the background of the Turkish “Academics for Peace” initiative a platform to continue their work in exile and to help create an academic program of critical Turkish Studies. The Academy ought not only to make possible the analysis and discussion of the basis of pluralistic and democratic societies and authoritarian ideologies and practices, but also to foster and stimulate Turkish Studies in Germany. A call for applications for up to 10 fellowships will follow shortly.

I would like to particularly recommend to you the Annual Conference of the Forum and the Max Weber Stiftung on “Chronologics: Periodisation in a Global Context”, which will be held from 7 to 9 December at the Maison de France, Berlin.

»Chronologics: Periodisation in a Global Context«

Periodisierungen und Epochenbegriffe organisieren und teilen Geschichte. Viele der modernen Kategorien und Periodisierungen sind im Europa des 19. Jahrhunderts geprägt worden und mit Teleologien, religiösen oder historischen Traditionen und den Machtverhältnissen des Kontextes ihrer Entstehung verbunden. Im Prozess der kolonialen Begegnung und der Entstehung einer nationalstaatlich organisierten Welt wurden sie in neue Zeitregime übersetzt, die Gemeinschaft begründen und begrenzen. Die diesjährige Jahreskonferenz widmet sich Fragen nach der kulturellen Bedingtheit von Geschichtseinteilungen und -vorstellungen, Fragen ihrer Vergleichbarkeit und Übersetzung sowie den Möglichkeiten nationen- und regionenübergreifender Periodisierungen.
Die wissenschaftliche Leitung liegt bei Thomas Maissen (Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris), Barbara Mittler (Heidelberger Centrum für Transkulturelle Studien) und Pierre Monnet (Institut franco-allemand de sciences historiques et sociales, Frankfurt/ Main). Die Konferenz wird durch eine Keynote Lecture am Abend des 8. Dezember von Sanjay Subrahmanyam (UCLA) eröffnet und in Kooperation mit dem Einstein-Zentrum Chronoi und dem Graduiertenkolleg »Global Intellectual History« der Freien Universität Berlin und der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin ausgerichtet.
Epochal divisions and terminologies such as “antiquity”, “postmodernity” and many others are more than mere tools used pragmatically to arrange school curricula or museum collections. The use of these terminologies carries particular imaginations and meanings for the discursive construction of nations and communities. Many contemporary categories and periodisations have their roots in 19th-century Europe. As part of the colonial encounter they have been translated into new “temporal authenticities” in Africa, Asia and the Americas, as well as in Europe. The aim of this conference is to uncover some of the dynamics behind particular cultural and historical uses of periodisation schemes, as concepts for ordering the past, and thus to reconsider these terminologies.
The conference will be convened by Thomas Maissen (Deutsches Historisches Institut Paris, DHIP), Barbara Mittler (Heidelberger Centrum für Transkulturelle Studien, HCTS), and Pierre Monnet (Institut franco-allemand de sciences historiques et sociales, Frankfurt/Main) with a keynote lecture by Sanjay Subrahmanyam (UCLA). It is hosted in cooperation with the Einstein Center Chronoi and the Graduate School “Global Intellectual History” of the Freie Universität Berlin and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Explorative Workshops
Am Forum finden zwei Explorative Workshops statt, die aus dem vergangenen Ideenwettbewerb als Gewinner hervorgegangen sind. Dieses Format gibt Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern die Gelegenheit, Forschungskonzepte und Projektideen auf ihre Fruchtbarkeit zu überprüfen und Kooperationen mit Forschenden aus aller Welt aufzubauen.
The Forum will host two workshops that have won our past call for ideas. With this format researchers get the opportunity to test and develop concepts and project ideas and to build networks with other researchers from all over the world.

Konzept: Annalisa Urbano (Universität Bayreuth)
Der Workshop wird in erster Linie jungeHistorikerinnen und Historiker aus Europa, den USA und Japan zusammenbringen, die zu Kolonialismus und Imperialismus der Achsenmächte im Zweiten Weltkrieg und den Folgen der Auflösung des deutschen, italienischen und japanischen Reichs arbeiten. Der Workshop setzt sich zum Ziel, Ansätze der Postcolonial Studies und der Geschichte der Dekolonisierung für die Erforschung der Nachkriegsgeschichte dieser Länder fruchtbar zu machen und damit auch die methodischen undtheoretischen Zugänge der Kolonialismus- und Imperialismusforschung zu erweitern.
By comparing and questioning contingences, perspectives, and entanglements of the end of German, Italian and Japanese empires, the workshop will bring together scholars working on similar aspects but on different regions. It will aim to build upon and expand historiographies on trans‐imperial studies, decolonization studies and postcolonial studies.

Bei diesem Workshop kommen HistorikerInnen, KünstlerInnen und ArchivarInnenzusammen, die zu und mit Phonogrammarchiven und zur Sound-Geschichte im Südpazifik arbeiten. Das Treffen dient den Teilnemenden zumtheoretischen Austausch über den Umgang mit Tonmaterialien und zur praktischen Erfahrungsweitergabe.
The workshop is a gathering of interdisciplinary and transregional scholars working in the South Pacific or doing research in this field. The Workshop aims to bring historians, artists, and archivists working on sound history/iography in the Asian Pacific together for an interdisciplinary theoretical conversation and practical knowledge-sharing and a reflection on the potentials of Berlin sound archives for this kind of research.

»Russland in Europa – Europa in Russland«

Das 8. WeberWorldCafé befasst sich mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Russland und Europa. Dabei wird häufig über vermeintliche Unterschiedlichkeiten von Identitäten und Ideen diskutiert. Gleichzeitig ist Russland schon seit dem 17. Jahrhundert fester Bestandteil der europäischen Politik. Am Beispiel ausgewählter Themen, die ExpertInnen und Gäste des WeberWorldCafés miteinander aufgreifen, wird diese widersprüchliche Konstellation näher beleuchtet, um Einblicke in das komplexe Beziehungsnetz zwischen Russland und Europa zu gewinnen. Darüber hinaus findet eine Führung durch die Ausstellung »1917. Revolution, Russland und Europa« statt. Das WorldCafé wird in Kooperation mit der Max Weber Stiftung, dem Deutschen Historischen Institut Moskau und dem Deutschen Historischen Museum veranstaltet.
The 8th WeberWorldCafé will discuss the relations and entanglements between Russia and Europe. Experts and guests of the WeberWorldCafé will take exemplary topics to enlighten assumed differences and similarities and to give insight into the complex relationship between Russia and Europe. Furthermore, there will be a guided tour through the exhibition “1917. Revolution, Russia, and Europe”.
The WeberWorldCafé is organized in cooperation with the Max Weber Stiftung, the German Historical Institute Moscow and the German Historical Museum in Berlin.

Wir freuen uns, den neuen Fellowjahrgang 2017/2018 begrüßen zu dürfen. In diesem akademischen Jahr werden 19 WissenschaftlerInnen aus Ägypten, dem Iran, Israel, Italien, Jordanien, dem Libanon, Russland, Syrien, der Türkei und den USA an ihren selbstgewählten Forschungsvorhaben arbeiten und zahlreiche Möglichkeiten zur Vernetzung und Diskussion erhalten.
We are glad to welcome our Fellows of 2017/2018. This academic year, 19 scholars from Egypt, Iran, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Russia, Syria, Turkey and the USA will have the opportunity to work on their research projects, join networks and take part in discussions.
EUME BERLINER SEMINAR

Unter dem Oberthema »Archeology of the Present« werden EUME-Fellows und andere WissenschaftlerInnen im Wintersemester 2017/18 ihre Forschungsergebnisse und -thesen zu Fragen der Aushandlung universeller Normen und Rechte zwischen Europa und dem Nahen Osten sowie ihre Ansichten auf die Fragmentierung von Geschichte und Gesellschaft im Nahen Osten diskutieren.
Das Seminar beginnt am 18. Oktober 2017 mit einem Vortrag des syrischen Intellektuellen Yassin Al-Hajj Saleh zum Thema »The Re-Entchantment of the World« und wird am 19. Oktober mit einem Vortrag des israelischen Historikers Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin mit dem Titel »God and the Refugees: The Return of the Suppressed« fortgesetzt. Am Montag, den 30. Oktober, spricht der ägyptische Politiker und Politikwissenschaftler Amr Hamzawy zu »Legalizing Authoritarianism in Egypt«.
With the arrival of the new Fellows, the EUME Berliner Seminar continues. Under this winter term’s umbrella theme “Archeology of the Present”, our Fellows and other guest researchers will discuss their research projects and ideas about the negotiation of universal norms and rights between Europe and the Middle East, and their views of the fragmentation of history and the present. On October 18, 2017, the Syrian intellectual Yassin al-Hajj Saleh will open the 2017/18 Berliner Seminar with his lecture on “The Re-Enchantment of the World”. On the next day, October 19, the seminar will be continued with a lecture on “God and the Refugees: The Return of the Suppressed” by the Israeli historian Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin. On Monday, October 30, the Egyptian politician and political scientist Amr Hamzawy will give a talk on “Legalizing Authoritarianism in Egypt”.

»Jews in Muslim Majority Countries – History and Prospects«

Diese dreitägige Konferenz befasst sich mit Geschichte und Gegenwart jüdischen Lebens in muslimischen Gesellschaften. Beiträge von WissenschaftlerInnen aus arabischen und europäischen Ländern, dem Iran, Israel, der Türkei, den USA aus unterschiedlichen Fachdisziplinen befassen sich mit jüdischer Kultur, Identität und Erinnerung, diskutieren aber auch Fragen ethnoreligiöser Pluralität und soziokultureller Verflechtungen. Die Veranstaltung wird organisiert von der W. Michael Blumenthal Akademie des Jüdischen Museums Berlin und der Philipps-Universität Marburg in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum Jüdische Studien Berlin-Brandenburg und EUME. Organized by W. Michael Blumenthal Academy of the Jewish Museum Berlin and Philipps-Universität Marburg, in cooperation with the Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg and EUME.
Recent years have seen a growing interest in Jews from Arab or Muslim majority countries of the Middle East across a variety of time periods. Scholars working at Western or Israeli universities often focus on aspects of Jewish communal and political life in Muslim majority countries prior to their exodus in the aftermath of the first Arab-Israeli war of 1948, or on their absorption into the margins of Israeli society in subsequent decades and the increasing role of Mizrahi Jews in contemporary Israeli politics and culture. But there is also a growing trend in research that reaches beyond nationalist or communalist narratives, to conceptualize Jewish communities in Middle Eastern countries as parts of local societies and evolving nation states. Moreover, a tradition of Jewish Studies exists in various Arab and Muslim majority countries, which is largely separated from Western scholarship. Some Middle Eastern countries, like Tunisia and Iraq, have seen a renewed interest in the Jewish heritage of the country, and Jewish contributions to national history and culture.

»Mobility: Objects, Materials, Concepts, Actors«
Noch bis zum 8. Oktober läuft in Buenos Aires die Transregionale Akademie »Mobility: Objects, Materials, Concepts, Actors«, auf der künstlerische Beziehungen zwischen Lateinamerika und anderen Weltregionen in den Blick genommen werden. Dabei werden Fragen nach den Dynamiken kultureller Kreativität sowie den Strategien der Aneignung und der Übersetzung von Kunst aus transregionaler und interdisziplinärer Perspektive diskutiert. Die Veranstaltung wird von Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Forum für Kunstgeschichte in Paris (Max Weber Stiftung) und der Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF) Buenos Aires ausgerichtet.

Until 8 October 2017, the Transregional Academy “Mobility: Objects, Concepts, Actors” takes place in Buenos Aires. It discusses the artistic relationships between Latin America and other world regions and, in particular, questions of the dynamics of cultural creativity, the strategies of appropriation and translation of art from a transregional and interdisciplinary perspective. The event is organized by Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices, the German Center for Art History in Paris (Max Weber Stiftung) and the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF) Buenos Aires. »The Global Power of Private Museums: Arts and Publics – States and Markets«

Gemeinsam mit Bénédicte Savoy (Fachgebiet Kunstgeschichte der Moderne, Collège de France; Technische Universität Berlin), Dorothee Wimmer (Centre for Art Market Studies) und Julia Voss (2016/17 Fellow des Wissenschaftskollegs zu Berlin) organisieren Hannah Baader und Georges Khalil dieses internationale Symposium, das die Geschichte, Konzeption und gesellschaftliche Rollevon staatlichen oder öffentlichen Museen in transregionalem Vergleich diskutiert. Die Rolle von öffentlichen Museen war in den letzten Jahren Gegenstand zahlreicher Symposien und Veröffentlichungen. Privatmuseen wurden dabei nur wenig untersucht, obgleich ihre Zahl in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten dramatisch gestiegen ist. Laut dem International Council of Museums (ICOM) gibt es weltweit mittlerweile mehr private Museumsräume als öffentliche. Die Mehrheit dieser Museen befindet sich in China, Südkorea, der USA und Deutschland. Auf dem diesjährigen internationalen Symposium, das vom Centre for Art Market Studies der TU Berlin in Kooperation mit dem Forum und Art Histories ausgerichtet wird, werden sich die Teilnehmenden der Hintergründe, der Mechanismen und Konsequenzen dieses Phänomens annehmen, das als »globale Macht privater Museen« bezeichnet werden kann. The history of state or public museums has been the focus of numerous symposiums and publications. Yet astonishingly little research has considered private museums, even though the number of private art museums has risen dramatically over the past two decades. According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), there are now more private museum spaces in the world than public ones. The majority of these museums are in China, South Korea, the USA and Germany, though private museums have been established also in Benin, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, India, Japan, Cameroon, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa, among other countries.
Alongside spectacularly designed venues that frequently draw international attention with their exhibition openings, events and acquisition politics, there are museum complexes that have a more regional focus, or operate with limited economic power. Others bridge regional and global concerns, needs or ambitions. At this year's international symposium of the Centre for Art Market Studies at TU Berlin, participants will be exploring the background, mechanisms and consequences of a phenomenon that may be referred to as the “global power of private museums”.
AUSBLICK / PROSPECTS
Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices befindet sich im akademischen Jahr 2017/18 in einer Übergangsphase, die die Gelegenheit bietet, in der Projektarbeit gewonnene Erfahrungen auszuwerten und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen und die Weichen für eine zweite Phase von Art Histories zu stellen. Eine Serie von Workshops mit wechselnden Kooperationspartnern in Berlin führen die Aktivitäten des Programms im Herbst 2017 fort. Fortgesetzt wird auch die Kooperation mit CAHIM (»Connecting Art Histories in the Museum«), einer Initiative des KHI Florenz und der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin. Themen sind beispielsweise die Koranmanuskripte (Alya Karame), Architektur auf dem Dekkan, Indien (Subashini Kaligotla), Porträtmalerei im späten Chinesischen Kaiserreich (Ning Yao) sowie die Zirkulation und Reproduktion von Kunst um 1900 (Max Koss) und das Konzept / nkishi/ aus Zentralafrika (Bruno Sotto Mayor).
In 2017/18, a transitional phase provides the opportunity to evaluate the experience gained in the project’s work up to now and to make it available to the public. Building on the positive experiences of the first project term, new agendas for a second phase of Art Histories are being worked out. The program activities are carried forward with a series of workshops with changing cooperation partners in Berlin and a Transregional Academy, »Mobility: Objects, Materials, Concepts, Actors«, in Buenos Aires in Fall 2017. Collaboration continues with CAHIM (“Connecting Art Histories in the Museum”), an initiative of the KHI Florence and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, that works together with numerous research institutions in Germany. A variety of research projects are realized in the different museums of Berlin (SMB), where the fellows are affiliated. The themes include Qur'anic Manuscripts (Alya Karame), Architecture of Deccan India (Subashini Kaligotla) and Portrait Paintings in Late Imperial China (Ning Yao) as well as the art circulation and reproduction around 1900 (Max Koss) and the concept of / nkishi/ in Central Africa (Bruno Sotto Mayor).
Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe
FELLOWS
Iuliia Buyskykh (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv) wird von Oktober 2017 bis Januar 2018 als Prisma Ukraïna-Fellow an ihrem Forschungsprojekt »To the West of the Bug: Stories from the Borderlands« arbeiten. Sie wird im Rahmen ihres Fellowships im Januar einen Workshop durchführen, der sich mit Fragen imaginierter Grenzen und ihrer Performanz auseinandersetzt. Mehr Informationen folgen.
Iuliia Buyskykh (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv) will spend her Prisma Ukraïna Fellowship here in Berlin from October 2017 until January 2018, working on her research project “To the West of the Bug: Stories from the Borderlands”. She will convene a workshop in January 2018 that will deal in the framework of her own research with imaginary borders and their performance. More Information will follow soon.

Zukunftsphilologie: Revisiting the Canons of Textual Scholarship
KONFERENZ
Vom 13. bis 15. Juli 2017 fand an der Freien Universität Berlin die internationale Konferenz »What was Philology in Arabic? Arabic-Islamic Textual Practices in the Early Modern World« statt und beleuchtete aus globaler und vergleichender Perspektive die bislang vernachlässigte Geschichte arabisch-islamischer Textpraktiken, während und nach der Begegnung mit europäischer Philologie.
In July 2017, the international conference “What was Philology in Arabic? Arabic-Islamic Textual Practices in the Early Modern World” took place at the Freie Universität Berlin. The conference brought together junior and senior scholars from a variety of fields to shed light on the neglected history of Arabic-Islamic textual practices before, during and after the encounter with European philology in a global and comparative perspective.

Es freut uns sehr, eine neue Ausgabe von Philological Encounters mit dem Titel »Formations of the Semitic: Race, Religion and Language in Modern European Scholarship« (Vol. 2, 3-4, 2017) ankündigen zu können. Die Artikel bewegen sich rund um europäische Konstruktionen, Anfechtungen, Genealogien und Diskurse bezüglich Semiten, semitischer Sprachen, Religionen und Literaturen und wird herausgegeben von Ya’ar Hever, Elizabeth Eva Johnston, Markus Messling und Islam Dayeh.
Einzelpersonen steht bis zum 31. Dezember 2018 der kostenlose Zugang zur Zeitschrift unter

We are happy to announce the publication of a new issue of Philological Encounters entitled “Formations of the Semitic: Race, Religion and Language in Modern European Scholarship” (Vol. 2, 3-4, 2017). The special issue is dedicated to examining the constructions, contestations, genealogies and workings of discourses about Semites, Semitic languages, religions and literatures in European scholarship. It is edited by Islam Dayeh, Ya’ar Hever, Elizabeth Eva Johnston and Markus Messling.
Individuals are eligible for free online access to the journal until 31 December 2018, using the access token PHEN4U.
