Editorial

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

Geschichten der Zukunft: Wie werden Narrative von Staatsbürgerschaft und Gemeinschaft der arabischen Welt nach 2011 in transnationalen Mediennetzwerken ausgehandelt? Wie kann demokratische Willensbildung in der Europäischen Union im digitalen Zeitalter geschützt werden? Wie hat sich Sozialismus im Ägypten der 1950er bis 70er Jahre angehört? Welche Rolle spielt der Kosakenmythos in der Ukraine und wie werden Erfahrungen von Gewalt und Flucht in arabischen Comics und Graphic Novels verarbeitet?

Diese und andere Fragen werden die 53 Postdoc-Wissenschaftler*innen beschäftigen, die das  Forum in diesem akademischen Jahr im Rahmen seiner Forschungsprogramme »Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europa (EUME)«, »Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe« und »re:constitution – Exchange and Analysis on Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe« als Fellows berufen hat.

Die Fellows kommen aus mehr als 27 Ländern und erhalten die Möglichkeit an ihren eigenen Projekten zu arbeiten und sich mit Kolleg*innen aus Deutschland und anderen Ländern auszutauschen. Während in unserem neuen Programm re:constitution Fellows aus der Europäischen Union an Einrichtungen in Berlin, Bukarest, Heidelberg, Brüssel, Kopenhagen, London, Padua, Rom, Warschau oder Wien Forschungsaufenthalte wahrnehmen, arbeiten die Fellows von EUME und Prisma Ukraïna Europe an Universitäten und Forschungseinrichtungen im Berlin-Brandenburger Raum. Mit seinen Forschungsprogrammen fördert das Forum transregionale Lerngemeinschaften und Netzwerke und den wissenschaftlichen Austausch über die Grenzen von Disziplinen und Regionen.

Die Fellows stellen ihre Forschungsprojekte in Seminaren und Workshops vor, über die wir auf unserem Blog »TRAFO – Beiträge zur Transregionalen Forschung« berichten, den wir gemeinsam mit der Max Weber Stiftung und dem Verein CrossArea betreiben und der aus Mitteln des BMBF gefördert wird. Der Blog dient der Vermittlung und Übersetzung von Forschungsfragen und -ergebnissen über die Grenzen von Disziplinen, Regionen und verschiedenen Öffentlichkeiten hinaus und erreicht zurzeit über 14.000 Leser*innen pro Monat. Zum Besuch unserer Veranstaltungen und der Lektüre des Blogs möchte ich Sie herzlich einladen.

Herzliche Grüße

~~~
Dear readers,
Histories of the future: How are narratives of citizenship and belonging mediated in transnational media networks in the post-2011 Arab world? How can democratic decision-making in the European Union be protected in the digital age? What did socialism sound like in Egypt during the 50s to the 70s? What role does the “Cossack myth” play in Ukraine, and how are experiences of violence and flight translated in Arab comics and graphic novels?
These and other questions will be addressed by the 53 postdoctoral scholars appointed by the Forum as Fellows of this academic year within its research programs “Europe in the Middle East – the Middle East in Europe (EUME)”, “Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe” and “re:constitution – Exchange and Analysis on Democracy and the Rule of Law in Europe”.
Coming from more than 27 countries, the Fellows are given the opportunity to work on their projects and exchange their ideas with fellow researchers from Germany and elsewhere. While the re:constitution Fellows come from the European Union and are working as guest researchers at host institutions in Berlin, Bucharest, Heidelberg, Brussels, Copenhagen, London, Padua, Rome, Warsaw and Vienna, the Fellows of EUME and Prisma Ukraïna have arrived in the Berlin-Brandenburg area to work at its universities and research institutes. Through its research programs, the Forum supports transregional learning communities and academic exchange across disciplines and borders.
The Fellows present their research projects in seminars and workshops, which are reported on “TRAFO – Blog for Transregional Research”. The TRAFO Blog is run jointly with the Max Weber Foundation and the CrossArea e.V., and funded by the BMBF. The blog aims to communicate and translate research questions and results beyond the boundaries of disciplines, regions and publics. It currently reaches over 14,000 readers per month.
I warmly invite you to attend the events of the Forum and its programs, and read more about our activities through this newsletter and by visiting our blogs.
Sincerely,
Georges Khalil
Academic Coordinator of the Forum Transregionale Studien
»The Cossack Myth in Eastern Europe in the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries«
12.-13. Dezember 2019, Forum Transregionale Studien
Convener: Denys Shatalov (Prisma Ukraïna Fellow 2019)
Der Kosakenmythos ist einer der mächtigsten Nationalmythen in Mittel- und Osteuropa und spielt für die moderne ukrainische Identität eine wichtige Rolle. Die Wirkungsmacht und Vielseitigkeit des Mythos führten dazu, dass er von verschiedenen politischen Bewegungen vereinnahmt wurde: von Progressisten und radikalen Nationalisten, von präfaschistischen Schwarzen Hundertschaften und den Bolschewiki. Im 21. Jahrhundert wurde er vor dem Hintergrund der Maidan-Ereignisse und des Krieges im Osten der Ukraine wieder aktuell. Der Workshop wird die Entwicklung, die Wandlungen und die multiplen Verwendungen des Kosakenmythos vom 19. bis ins 21. Jahrhundert diskutieren.
Weitere Informationen
The Cossack Myth is one of the most powerful national myths in Central and Eastern Europe and plays an important role in the modern Ukrainian identity. Its power and versatility made it prone to be actively used by Ukrainian progressists and radical nationalists, but it also responded to the ideological needs of the Black Hundreds and the Bolsheviks. A new stage of the myth’s actualization took place in the 21st century during the events of the Maidan and the war in the east of Ukraine. The workshop aims to discuss the development, transformation and use of the Cossack Myth from the 19th to the 21st century.
Auftakt / Launch
Mit einer Diskussion zum Thema »One rule of law for all EU member states or twenty-eight different shades?« (Audioaufnahme zum Nachhören) fand am 23. Oktober der öffentliche Auftakt des Programms in Berlin statt. re:constitution wird gemeinsam mit Democracy Reporting International koordiniert und von der Stiftung Mercator gefördert.
With a debate on the theme “One rule of law for all EU member states or twenty-eight different shades?”, (with audio recording) re:constitution celebrated its launch on 23 October in Berlin. The programme is jointly coordinated by the Forum with Democracy Reporting International and funded by Stiftung Mercator.
Zum 1. Oktober haben die re:constitution-Fellows ihre Arbeit aufgenommen. 20 junge Rechtswissenschaftler*innen und –praktiker*innen aus über 10 europäischen Ländern beschäftigen sich im Laufe des akademischen Jahres mit Fragen der europäischen Verfassung(en), geteilten Auffassungen von Demokratie und Rechtspraxen in der Europäischen Union. Zentrales Element des Fellowships sind Auslandsphasen (Stagen) an Orten der Rechtswissenschaft und -praxis innerhalb der Europäischen Union. Die Fellows kommen zu drei Treffen im Rahmen des akademischen Jahres persönlich zusammen.
The first re:constitution Fellows  started their fellowships on 1 October. During the course of the academic year, 20 young scholars and practitioners of law from over 10 European countries will look at questions of European constitution(s), concepts of democracy and the rule of law. The central element of the re:constitution fellowship is a mobility phase (stage) abroad in various locations of jurisprudence and legal practice across the European Union. The fellows will meet together in three sessions throughout the academic year.
Veranstaltungen in Planung / Planned Events
»Institutionen richterlicher Unabhängigkeit« ist das Thema des ersten re:constitution-Seminars, das im Anschluss an das nächste Fellow-Treffen am New Europe College in Bukarest im Februar 2020 stattfinden wird. Das Forum wird Expert*innen aus Europa zu einer offenen Diskussion dieser Frage nach Bukarest einladen.
“Institutions of Judicial Independence” is the theme of the first re:constitution Seminar. It will take place following the next Fellow Exchange Meeting at the New Europe College in Bucharest in February 2020. The Forum will invite experts from Europe to Bucharest to discuss this issue.
100 Histories of 100 Worlds in One Object
9.-13. Dezember 2019, University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston
Konzept: Mirjam Brusius (GHI London)
Neil MacGregor’s BBC Radio 4 programme (and subsequent book) A History of the World in 100 Objects of 2010 was a resounding success with the British public, as well as internationally. Nearly ten years after the radio programme was broadcast it is time to return to its narrative; and in particular to the formerly subaltern nations it left out. Where are the stories of the objects presented as seen by people who once used them? How was knowledge about an object informed by colonial collecting practices; and how is this context presented in museums today? Could an entirely new History of the World in 100 Objects be told, and if so, how? Can a history of the world be told through a certain number of objects at all? How can formerly excluded voices be empowered to tell their own histories beyond these frameworks?
