Editorial

Das Mittelmeer spielt für die Orientierung Europas eine zentrale Rolle: Es ist zugleich Kultur- und Grenzraum, Sehnsuchtsort und Flüchtlingsfalle, Projektionsfläche europäischer Vergangenheit und Zukunft. Mit der Transregionalen Akademie »De-Framing the Mediterranean from the 21st Century: Places, Routes, Actors« laden wir Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus unterschiedlichen Weltregionen und Disziplinen dazu ein, die historischen Erbschaften, die Routen und Grenzen sowie die Orte und Akteure zu erkunden, die den Mittelmeerraum aus heutiger Perspektive prägen und verändern. Die Akademie findet im September dieses Jahres auf der griechischen Insel Kreta statt.

»Flüchtlinge in der Stadt« ist das Thema des gemeinsam mit dem Berliner Zentrum Moderner Orient organisierten Urban Studies Seminars. In dem nächsten WeberWorldCafé am 28. April diskutieren wir die Situation und den Umgang mit Flüchtlingen sowie die Auswirkungen von Fluchtbewegungen in anderen Epochen und Städten mit einer größeren Gruppe von Berliner Schülern und Schülerinnen.

Ich möchte Sie außerdem auf die neue Vortragsreihe der Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative mit dem Oberthema »Geographien der Macht in Osteuropa im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert« hinweisen. Sie sind herzlich eingeladen.

Wir freuen uns, dass der Leiter unseres Forschungsprogramms Zukunftsphilologie, Islam Dayeh, als Juniorprofessor an das Seminar für Arabistik und Semitistik der Freien Universität Berlin berufen wurde und dass aus der Programmarbeit der letzten vier Jahre eine neue wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift hervorgegangen ist: Philological Encounters. Die erste Ausgabe ist eben im Wissenschaftsverlag Brill erschienen.

The Mediterranean Sea plays a central role in orienting Europe. It is simultaneously a cultural and border region, a target for yearning and a trap for refugees, and a projection screen for Europe’s past and future. In the framework of the transregional academy “De-Framing the Mediterranean from the 21st Century: Places, Routes, Actors”, we invite researchers from various world regions and disciplines to explore the historical heritages, the routes and boundaries, and the places and actors that, from today’s perspective, shape and change the Mediterranean region. The academy will be held in September of this year on the Greek island of Crete.

“Refugees in the City” is the topic of the Urban Studies Seminar we are organizing in collaboration with Berlin’s Zentrum Moderner Orient. At the next WeberWorldCafé on 28 April, we will discuss with a large group of Berlin pupils the situation and how we deal with refugees, as well as the effects of refugee movements in other epochs and cities.

I would also like to draw your attention to the new lecture series of the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative with the overarching theme “Geographies of Power in Eastern Europe in the 20th and 21st Centuries”. You are cordially invited.

We are pleased that the head of our research program Zukunftsphilologie, Islam Dayah, has been appointed a Junior Professor at the Seminar for Arabic Studies and Semitic Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin and that a new scholarly magazine, Philological Encounters, has emerged from our program work of the last four years. The first issue has just appeared with the scientific publishing house, Brill.

Wie verändert sich die soziale, demographische und ethnische Zusammensetzung von Städten weltweit? Es werden ExpertInnen aus Wissenschaft und Zivilgesellschaft mit SchülerInnen aus Berlin diskutieren, wie in Städten weltweit und in verschiedenen historischen Kontexten mit Flüchtlingen umgegangen wurde.
Dieses WeberWorldCafé findet statt in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum Moderner Orient, EUME, der Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung des Landes Berlin und dem Verein »Gesicht zeigen!«

What effect does the current influx of refugees have on the organization of urban spaces in Germany, but also in the neighboring countries of the crisis region? How does the social, demographic, and ethnic structure of cities change worldwide? “Refugees in the City” will be the topic of our next WeberWorldCafé. Experts from academia and civil society will discuss with pupils from Berlin how cities all over the world and in different historical contexts have dealt with refugees.
This WeberWorldCafé will be held in cooperation with the Zentrum Moderner Orient, EUME, the Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung des Landes Berlin, and the association “Gesicht zeigen!”.

ART HISTORIES TRAVELLING SEMINAR
Vom 31.April bis 12. Mai 2016 findet das diesjährige Travelling Seminar des Programms Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices im Iran statt. Das Travelling Seminar wird in Kooperation mit Combiz Moussavi-Aghdam (Art University Teheran/Art Histories Fellow 2014/15) durchgeführt und von den Programmdirektoren Hannah Baader und Gerhard Wolf gleitet. Geplant sind u.a. Besuche der Orte Shiraz, Persepolis, Yazd, Naein, Isfahan, Soltaniyeh und Teheran, zahlreicher Museen und Institutionen, sowie ein Seminar an der Art University Teheran und Treffen mit jungen Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen.

This year's Travelling Seminar of the program Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices will be held from 31 April to 12 May 2016 and accompanied by the program directors Hannah Baader and Gerhard Wolf in cooperation with Combiz Moussavi-Aghdam (Art University Tehran/Art Histories Fellow 2014/15). The participants will travel to Iran planning to visit Shiraz, Persepolis, Yazd, Naein, Isfahan, Soltaniyeh and Tehran. The final event of the excursion will be a seminar with students from the Art University Tehran.

»Culture, Society and Freedom« ist das Oberthema des EUME Berliner Seminars im Sommersemester 2016.
In den Seminarsitzungen werden Themen wie die Aussichten für Demokratie in Israel/Palästina, Kultur und Politik in der deutsch-türkischen Migrationsgeschichte, Recht und Geschlechterfragen in Tunesien oder neue Ansätze der Begründung von Glaubensfreiheit aus dem Koran heraus diskutiert. The EUME Berliner Seminar will continue on the theme “Culture, Society and Freedom” during the summer term of 2016.
