Editorial
Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler brauchen Freiräume, um ihre Ideen zu testen und Forschungserfahrungen miteinander zu teilen. In einer Zeit zunehmender Spezialisierung in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften bieten transregionale Perspektiven die Möglichkeit, Forschungsfragen zu durchdenken, indem Verflechtungen und Grenzziehungen einer globalisierten Welt einbezogen werden.
Wir laden daher gemeinsam mit der Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (MWS) in diesem Jahr erstmals Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler zu einem Ideenwettbewerb für internationale Workshops und Sommer-/Winterakademien ein. Sie können für Veranstaltungen im Jahr 2016 bis 1. Juli 2015 Ihre Vorschläge einreichen.
Mit dem Text »What is it like to become a likeness of oneself? Gestures of Light, Motion and Mind at the Surfaces of Representation« startet das Forum eine neue Publikationsreihe von wissenschaftlichen Essays. In dem ersten Essay behandelt Sonam Kachru (Zukunftsphilologie-Fellow 2013/2014) am Beispiel von Sanskrit-Poesie das Zusammenspiel zwischen Text und Bild.
Der nächste Essay wird von der Kunsthistorikerin Clare Davies (Irmgard Coninx Prize Fellow 2014/2015) stammen und die Genese des Konzepts einer »Arabischen Kunst« im Zusammenhang transregionaler (Afrika-Asien-Lateinamerika) Netzwerke und Affinitäten der 50er bis 70er Jahre beschreiben.
Die Essays sind übrigens ebenso wie die anderen Veröffentlichungen, die im Rahmen des Forums und seiner Programme entstehen, in dem neuen Publikationsbereich auf unserer Homepage zu finden.

Scholars need free spaces to test their ideas and share their research experience. In times of increasing specialization within the social sciences and humanities, transregional comparisons offer the opportunity to rethink research problems in a way that takes the entanglements and parochialisms of a globalized world into account.
This year, for the first time, the Forum Transregionale Forschung and the Max Weber Stiftung − Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (MWS) invite scholars to take part in a contest of ideas for international workshops and summer/winter academies. You can submit your suggestions for events in the year 2016 by 1 July 2015.
With the text “What is it like to become a likeness of oneself? Gestures of Light, Motion, and Mind at the Surfaces of Representation”, the Forum has initiated a new publication series of scholarly essays. In the first essay, Sonam Kachru (Zukunftsphilologie Fellow 2013/2014) addresses the interplay between text and picture, using the example of Sanskrit poetry.
The next essay will be by the art historian Clare Davies (Irmgard Coninx Prize Fellow 2014/2015) and will describe the genesis of the concept of an “Arab art” in the context of transregional (Africa-Asia-Latin America) networks and affinities in the 1950s to 1970s.
The essay and all other publications that have emerged in the work context of the Forum and its programs can be found in the publications section on our homepage.
You are also cordially invited to attend the workshops and seminars we are holding in the framework of our research program in the coming weeks.

Die Konferenz schließt an die »Suchprozesse für innovative Fragestellungen in der Wissenschaft« an, die die Werner Reimers Stiftung Ende des vergangenen Jahrhunderts organisiert hat. Aus den Konferenzen sind seinerzeit die Studien »Recht, Kultur und Gesellschaft im Prozeß der Globalisierung« von Klaus Günther und Shalini Randeria sowie »Der cultural turn in den Humanwissenschaften: Area Studies im Auf- oder Abwind des Kulturalismus?« von Michael Lackner und Michael Werner entstanden, die wir über die Publikationsplattforum perspectivia.net erneut zur Verfügung stellen. Auf der geplanten zweiten Konferenz werden ehemalige Akteure der Reimers-Konferenzen mit Fachvertreterinnen und Fachvertretern diskutieren: Wie hat sich das Verhältnis von Regionalwissenschaften und Disziplinen in der Forschung seitdem verändert? The conference follows up the conference “Suchprozesse für innovative Fragestellungen in der Wissenschaft” (processes of searching for innovative questions in scholarship) that the Werner Reimers Stiftung organized at the end of last year. At that time, the conference led to the studies “Recht, Kultur und Gesellschaft im Prozeß der Globalisierung” (law, culture and society in the process of globalization) by Klaus Günther and Shalini Randeria and “Der cultural turn in den Humanwissenschaften: Area Studies im Auf- oder Abwind des Kulturalismus?” (the cultural turn in the humanities: Area Studies in the up- or downwind of culturalism?) by Michael Lackner and Michael Werner, which we are making available again on our publication platform perspectivia.net. At this second conference, participants from the previous Reimers conferences will discuss with scholars currently active in the fields: How has the relation between Area Studies and research in displines changed over time? What is the situation today in the research fields that were identified 15 years ago as pioneering? What prospects do these fields have in the future?

Wir laden zum nächsten WeberWorldCafé ein, das sich mit dem Themenkomplex von Museum–Macht–Identität beschäftigen wird. Bei diesem interaktiven Veranstaltungsformat gibt es die Möglichkeit, mit internationalen Expertinnen und Experten zu diskutieren, welche Ordnungen der Museen heute jenseits traditioneller, oft kolonial vorgeprägter musealer Denksysteme sinnvoll wären. Wie können wir das Zusammenspiel von Wissensproduktion, nationalen Narrativen und Ausstellungswesen neu denken?

We invite young scholars and the interested public to the next WeberWorldCafé, titled “Museum, Power, and Identity”. »Writing Histories of Now in Middle East Art and Architecture«, 6.-7. Juli 2015

Im Umgang mit moderner und zeitgenössischer Kunst des Nahen Ostens zeichnen sich in Museen und dem Kunstmarkt weitreichende Änderungen ab. Zahlreiche Forschungsprojekte rollen das Feld der Kunst und Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts im Nahen Osten neu auf: Sie verbinden die Narrative der Moderne sowohl mit vormoderner als auch mit denjenigen zeitgenössischer Kunst und hinterfragen die jeweiligen geopolitischen, ethnischen und religiösen Referenzrahmen. Der Workshop bringt jüngere, international bereits ausgewiesene Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler zusammen, um über Terminologien und Zukunft des Forschungsfelds zu diskutieren.

A major shift in dealing with the modern and contemporary art of the Middle East within museums and the art market is underway. Increasing numbers of research projects focus on twentieth-century art and architecture in the region rethinking the field, linking narratives of modernism to both the pre-modern and the contemporary and questioning the geopolitical, ethnic, and religious frames of reference with which they are associated. This workshop brings together researchers to discuss terminologies and to discuss a common research agenda.

FILMREIHE / FILM SERIES »BEYOND SPRING«
Im Mai und Juni 2015 setzt EUME seine Kooperation mit dem Verein Mayadin Al-Tahrir in der Form einer gemeinsamen Filmreihe fort. Beyond Spring zeigt Filme aus Syrien (21.5.15), Tunesien (28.5.15), Ägypten (6.6.2015) und dem Irak (11.6.2015), die sich mit grundlegenden gesellschaftlichen und politischen Problemen der zeitgenössischen Arabischen Welt beschäftigen. Die Filmvorführungen beginnen jeweils um 19.00 Uhr in der Werkstatt der Kulturen (Wissmannstr. 32 in 12049 Berlin) und werden anschließend von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus dem Umfeld von EUME diskutiert. In May and June 2015, EUME continues its cooperation with the association Mayadin Al-Tahrir in the form of a joint film series, Beyond Spring. Shown will be films from Syria (21 May 15), Tunisia (28 May 15), Egypt (6 June 2015), and Iraq (11 June 2015) that deal with fundamental societal and political problems in the contemporary Arab world. The film screenings all begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Werkstatt der Kulturen (Wissmannstr. 32 in postal zone 12049 Berlin), followed by discussions with scholars associated with EUME.

TRAVELLING SEMINAR
»From Traditional to Contemporary Aesthetic Practices in Westafrica«, Benin and Togo, 10.-23.Mai 2015
Während des zweiten Travelling Seminars werden sich 18 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unterschiedlicher Disziplinen vor Ort Fragen der architektonischen Denkmalpflege in Westafrika, der in Lehm gebauten Palastarchitekturen des Königreiches Dahomey, der Anthropologie des Wohnens und des Hausbaus der Batammaliba, der Gedächtnisorte des Sklavenhandels, der sozialen und ästhetischen Praktiken des Voudoun, der frühen Geschichte des Fetisch bzw. feitiço, neueren Museumsinitiativen wie dem Zinsou Museum in Quidah und der dichten Szene zeitgenössischer Künstler widmen. Die Exkursionsroute wird von Cotonou über Porto Novo, Quidah und Lomé (Togo) in die Atakoraregion und dann nach Abomey führen. Ein Seminar an der Universität Abomey-Calavi mit Studentinnen und Studenten der Kunstgeschichte und verwandter Disziplinen wird das Programm abschließen.
Konzept und Organisation: Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices mit Romuald Tchibozo (Kunstgeschichte, Universität Abomey-Calav, Bénin /Art Histories Fellow 2013/2014) und Suzanne Preston Blier (Afrikanische Kunst, Harvard University).
At the second Travelling Seminar, 18 researchers from different disciplines will discuss questions of the architectural preservation of historical monuments in West Africa, of clay-built palace architecture in the Kingdom of Dahomey, the anthropology of living and the house construction of the Batammaliba, the memorial sites of the slave trade, the social and aesthetic practices of the Voudoun, the early history of the fetish or feitiço, recent museum initiatives like the Zinsou Museum in Quidah, and the dense scene of contemporary artists. The excursion route will lead us from Cotonou through Porto Novo, Quidah, and Lomé (Togo) to the Atakora region and Abomey. The program will end with a seminar at the University of Abomey-Calavi with students of art history and related disciplines.

Die beiden Denker Ibn Khaldun und Giambattista Vico trennen zwar mehr als 300 Lebensjahre, ihre Schriften sind aber inhaltlich eng aufeinander bezogen. Etwa zwanzig internationale Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer werden in dem Workshop die juristischen, geschichtswissenschaftlichen und philosophischen Texte von Vico und Khaldun in vergleichender und transregionaler Perspektive diskutieren.

Though more than 300 years of life separate Ibn Khaldun and Giambattista Vico, the content of their writings is closely related. At the workshop, about twenty international participants will discuss the juridical, historiographical, and philosophical writings of Vico and Khaldun from a comparative and transregional perspective.

»World Scripts—Concepts and Practices of Writing from a Comparative Perspective«, 4.-14. September 2015, Cape Town
Die Winterakademie wird aus einer vergleichenden und globalen Perspektive das Vokabular und die Typologie des Schreibens in den verschiedenen philologischen Traditionen und die Rolle der Schrift als Technologie in der Produktion, Diffusion, Archivierung und des Wissensaustauschs erforschen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen das Schreiben und die miteinander verwobenen Geschichten, die Afrika mit den Regionen des Mittelmeeres, des Indischen Ozeans und Süd- und Südostasiens, verbinden.

This Winter Academy will explore, from a comparative and global perspective, the vocabularies and typologies of writing in various philological traditions and the role of script as a technology in the production, diffusion, archiving, and exchange of knowledge. At the center stand the writing and the mutually interwoven histories that tie Africa with the Mediterranean region and, via the Indian Ocean, with South and Southeast Asia.
