Editorial

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

wir freuen uns über die Zusage des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung, die Zusammenarbeit des Forums mit der Max Weber Stiftung bis Ende 2019 weiter zu fördern. Die neue Projektphase werden wir dazu nutzen, die Kooperation mit der Stiftung und ihren Instituten zu vertiefen.

Im Rahmen dieser Verbundarbeit haben wir mit den Themenfeldern »Mobilität – Wissen – Gesellschaft« für die nächste Zeit inhaltliche Schwerpunkte gesetzt. Den Auftakt bildete unser diesjähriger Ideenwettbewerb für Explorative Workshops, für den 31 Bewerbungen aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet eingegangen sind. Eine Transregionale Akademie zum Thema »Infrastructure, Regions and Urbanization«, die im Oktober 2018 in Kooperation mit dem DIJ Tokyo und der National University of Singapore in Singapur zusammenkommt, erkundet den Zusammenhang von Infrastrukturen und dem Wandel regionaler wie urbaner Ordnung. »Mobilität – Wissen – Gesellschaft« ist auch das Thema unserer Jahreskonferenz 2018.

Die Forschungsprogramme des Forums setzen ihre Arbeit mit verwandten Themen fort. In Kooperation mit dem DHI Warschau wird sich ein Prisma-Ukraïna-Workshop vom 13. bis 15. Juni in Warschau mit »offizieller« Geschichtsschreibung in Osteuropa in Schulbüchern, Museen, öffentlichen Monumenten u.a. befassen; im EUME Berliner Seminar stehen im kommenden Semester mit dem Oberthema »Populäre Geschichten«  im Fokus der Diskussion, die sich offiziellen oder eindimensionalen Narrativen entziehen.

»Zukunftsvorstellungen in der arabischen Welt nach den Revolutionen« ist die zweite Konferenz, die EUME gemeinsam mit dem Arab Fund for Arts and Culture am 9. und 10. Juni in Berlin ausrichten wird. Hier stehen Zukunftsvisionen und Dystopien des 20. und 21. Jahrhundert zur Debatte. Unter dem Titel »At Home: Jews and Muslims in Eastern Europe« findet vom 28. bis 29. Juni in Kooperation mit der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde ein weiterer Workshop von Prisma Ukraïna statt, der die Erfahrungen mit religiösem Pluralismus in Ost- und Südosteuropa in Bezug zu den zeitgenössischen Debatten im Westen des Subkontinents setzen will. Im Oktober 2018 tagt die erste Konferenz unserer Akademie im Exil zur Frage der Bedeutung und den Kontexten von »Exil und akademischer Freiheit heute« am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut in Essen.

Herzlich laden wir Sie dazu ein, an unseren Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen, sich gegebenenfalls an den Ausschreibungen zu beteiligen, unseren Audio-Kanal auf Voice Republic oder den TRAFO-Blog zu besuchen, der im vergangenen Jahr über 100.000 LeserInnen erreichen konnte.

Dear Readers,

We are pleased that the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research has agreed to continue to support the Forum’s cooperation with the Max Weber Foundation until the end of 2019. We will use the new project phase to deepen our collaboration with the Foundation and its institutes.

In the framework of this cooperation, we have chosen the thematic fields “Mobility – Knowledge – Society” as our substantive emphases for the next period. This has begun with this year’s Call for Ideas for Explorative Workshops, for which 31 applications have been received from all over Germany. A Transregional Academy on the topic “Infrastructure, Regions, and Urbanization”, to meet in October 2018 in cooperation with the DIJ Tokyo and the National University of Singapore, will explore the connection between infrastructures and the evolution of regional and urban order. “Mobility – Knowledge – Society” is also the topic of our Annual Conference in 2018.

The Forum’s research programs continue their work with related topics. In cooperation with the GHI Warsaw, a Prisma Ukraïna Workshop from 13 to 15 June in Warsaw will focus on “official” historiography in Eastern Europe in schoolbooks, museums, public monuments, etc.; the overarching topic of discussion at the coming semester’s EUME Berliner Seminar will be “Popular Histories” that elude official and one-dimensional narratives.

“Imaginations of the Future in the Arab World after the Revolutions” is the second conference that EUME will host together with the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, this time on 9 and 10 June in Berlin. Here, visions of the future and dystopias of the 20th and 21st centuries will be debated. Under the title “At Home: Jews and Muslims in Eastern Europe”, another Prisma Ukraïna Workshop will be held on 28 and 29 June in cooperation with the German Association for East European Studies; it will relate experiences with religious pluralism in Eastern and Southeastern Europe to the contemporary debates in the West of the subcontinent. In October 2018, our Academy in Exile will hold its first conference at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Essen (KWI), focusing on the question of the significance and contexts of “Exile and Academic Freedom Today”.

Ideenwettbewerb / Call for Ideas

»Mobilität – Wissen – Gesellschaft«
Die Auswahl der GewinnerInnen unserer letzten Ausschreibung für Explorative Workshops zum neuen Forschungsrahmenthema »Mobilität – Wissen – Gesellschaft« findet Ende April statt. Mit den Explorativen Workshops bieten das Forum und die Max Weber Stiftung transregional arbeitenden WissenschaftlerInnen an deutschen Universitäten und Forschungseinrichtungen eine Möglichkeit zur Entwicklung und Erprobung neuer Fragestellungen und Projektideen an.
Aus den Diskussionen der zwei vergangenen Explorativen Workshops sind mehrere Beiträge auf dem TRAFO-Blog publiziert worden: vom Workshop »The Axis Powers and Decolonization« (Dezember 2017) z.B. ein Interview zum kolonialen Erbe des Nationalsozialismus oder ein Audio-Interview über das Ende des japanischen Kolonialreichs in (Süd-)Ostasien.
Außerdem finden Sie auf TRAFO ein Video-Interview zum Workshop »Acoustic Histories/Historiographies in the Asia Pacific« (Januar 2018).

“Mobility – Knowledge – Society”
The winners of our last call for ideas for Explorative Workshops on the new research theme “Mobility – Knowledge – Society” will be selected at the end of April. With Explorative Workshops, the Forum and the Max Weber Stiftung give scholars from German universities and research institutions, who work in a transregional perspective, the opportunity to develop and test new research questions and project ideas.
From the past Explorative Workshops several contributions have been published at the TRAFO Blog: e.g. an interview on the colonial heritage of national socialism or an audio interview on the Japanese Empire in Asia, both from the workshop “The Axis Powers and Decolonization” (December 2017).
Futhermore, you can find a video interview on the workshop “Acoustic Histories/Historiographies in the Asia Pacific” (January 2018).

Die Akademie ist eine Kooperationsveranstaltung des Forums, der National University of Singapore und des Deutschen Instituts für Japanstudien der Max Weber Stiftung in Tokio. The Academy is held in cooperation with the National University of Singapore and the Deutsches Instituts für Japanstudien of the Max Weber Stiftung in Tokio.

Akademie im Exil / Academy in Exile

Im Oktober 2017 haben wir gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Turkistik der Universität Duisburg-Essen und dem Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut in Essen an zwei Standorten die Akademie im Exil gegründet. Sie wird von der VolkswagenStiftung gefördert. Die Akademie soll WissenschaftlerInnen aus dem Umfeld der »Academics for Peace« aus der Türkei eine Plattform bieten, um ihre Arbeit im Exil fortzusetzen und die türkeibezogene Forschung in Deutschland zu stärken.

In October 2017, the Forum, the Institute for Turkish Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, have founded the “Academy in Exile” in Essen and Berlin. The Academy is an initiative that is supported by the VolkswagenStiftung. It offers researchers from the background of the Turkish “Academics for Peace” initiative a platform to continue their work in exile and to strenghten the research related to Turkey in Germany.

Die ersten, vornehmlich aus der Türkei kommenden WissenschaftlerInnen haben ihre Fellowships am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut in Essen und am Forum in Berlin angetreten.

We are happy to announce that, in January 2018, the first scholars have arrived at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen and at the Forum in Berlin to begin their Fellowships.


Konferenz / Conference

Am 18. und 19. Oktober findet die erste Konferenz der Akademie im Exil am KWI in Essen zum Thema »Exil und akademische Freiheit heute« statt. Der Call for Papers läuft noch bis 15. April 2018.

In October 2018, the first conference of the Academy in Exile with the theme “Exile and Academic Freedom today” will take place at the KWI Essen. The Call for Papers is open until 15 April 2018.

Fellows

Wir freuen uns über die Ankunft von vier weiteren EUME-Fellows, die ihre Forschungsaufenthalte im Frühling und Sommer 2018 in Berlin verbringen werden:

Michael Allan (EUME/CNMS-Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2017/18) ist Associate Professor für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der University of Oregon und war bereits im akademischen Jahr 2011/12 EUME-Fellow. Er ist Autor von In the Shadow of World Literature: Sites of Reading in Colonial Egypt. Sein neues Buchprojekt »Picturing the World« befasst sich mit der transregionalen Geschichte des frühen Kinos.

Die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Zeina G. Halabi (EUME/CNMS-Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2018–2020) ist Assistant Professor für Arabische Literatur an der American University of Beirut und Autorin von The Unmaking of the Arab Intellectual: Prophecy, Exile, and the Nation. Auch sie war bereits im akademischen Jahr 2012/13 EUME-Fellow und wird nun an ihrem zweiten Buchprojekt arbeiten, das sich mit Archivpraktiken zeitgenössischer arabischsprachiger Künstler und Literaten beschäftigt.

Arturo Monaco (EUME/CNMS-Fellow des DAAD 2018) ist an der Sapienza University of Rome tätig. Im Rahmen seines Forschungsaufenthalts in Berlin wird er sich seinem Projekt widmen, in dem er die verschiedenen Darstellungsformen des Surrealismus in der modernen arabischen Literatur erforschen möchte.

Die Politikwissenschaftlerin Wendy Pearlman (EUME/CNMS-Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2016–21) ist Associate Professor an der Northwestern University. Sie ist Autorin von We Crossed A Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria, das während mehrerer kurzer Forschungsaufenthalte in den vergangenen Jahren entstand und große Aufmerksamkeit in den Medien (u.a. im Guardianund LA Review of Books) erregte. Ihr neues Projekt thematisiert Exilerfahrungen und Fragen der Integration von syrischen Geflüchteten in Deutschland.

We are glad to welcome four EUME Fellows who will spend research stays in Berlin in spring and summer 2018:

»Imagining the Future: The Arab World in the Aftermath of Revolution«

Nachdem in der ersten gemeinsamen Konferenz mit dem Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) im letzten Jahr das Thema »Das Exil Be/Schreiben« debattiert wurde, befasst sich die zweite Konferenz mit der literarischen und künstlerischen Produktion zwischen Utopie und Dystopie im Kontext und im Nachgang der jüngsten Revolutionen in der arabischen Welt. Die Konferenz wird kuratiert von Rasha Salti (Beirut) und Khaled Saghieh (Beirut / EUME-Fellow 2016/17).

Succeeding the first conference “Writing (in) Exile” that was organized jointly with the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) last year, the second conference will investigate the cultural and literary production between utopia and dystopia in the context and aftermath of the recent revolution in the Arab World. The conference is curated by Rasha Salti (Beirut) and Khaled Saghieh (Beirut / EUME Fellow 2016/17). More information will follow soon on our website.

Im Januar endete die Ausschreibung für sechs weitere Fellowships im akademischen Jahr 2018/19. Eine Auswahl wird in Kürze bekanntgegeben. Über 200 Bewerbungen belegen die anhaltende Attraktivität des Forschungsprogramms.

The call for applications for six fellowships for the academic year 2018/19 closed in January 2018. The selected fellows will be announced shortly. Over 200 applications prove the continuing attractiveness of the research program.

In seiner Studie Germany and the Ottoman Railways (Yale University Press, 2017) beleuchtet Peter H. Christensen (Art Histories-Fellow 2016/17) die Zusammenhänge zwischen Infrastrukturen, Kunst und imperialen Interessen (siehe Christensens Beitrag in der New-Book-Sektion unseres Blogs vom 22. März 2018). In his study Germany and the Ottoman Railways (Yale University Press, 2017) Peter H. Christensen (Art Histories Fellow 2016/17) investigates the connections between infrastructures, art, and imperial interests (see Christensen’s contribution for our “New Books” series at our blog on 22 March 2018).

Ching-Ling Wang (CAHIM-Fellow 2012/13) hat für sein Buch Praying for Myriad Virtues (Kettler Verlag, 2018) das 1770 entstandene Gemälde »Die Buddhapredigt« untersucht, das bisher im Depot des Berliner Ethnologischen Museums weilte und ab 2019 im Berliner Humboldt-Forum ausgestellt werden soll. For his book Praying for Myriad Virtues (Kettler Verlag, 2018) Ching-Ling Wang (CAHIM Fellow 2012/13) has examined the painting “The Buddha Preaching” (1770) that is part of the collection of the Berlin Ethnologisches Museum and is going to be displayed at the Berlin Humboldt Forum in 2019.

Winterakademie
»Revisiting the Nation: Transcultural Contact Zones in Eastern Europe«

Auf der Prisma Ukraïna Winterakademie (26. Februar–7. März 2018) diskutierten 26 WissenschaftlerInnen aus 9 Ländern am New Europe College in Bukarest anhand ihrer Forschungsvorhaben über Geschichtsnarrative und die mit ihnen verbundenen nationalen und regionalen Prozesse von Identitätsbildung im Licht aktueller politischer Entwicklungen in Mittel- und Osteuropa. Informationen zum Programm, den Teilnehmenden und verschiedene Beiträge sind auf unserem Blog »Transregional Academies« verfügbar.

26 researchers from 9 countries met at the Prisma Ukraïna Winter Academy at the New Europe College in Bucharest from 26 February to 7 March 2018 and discussed historical narratives that are connected to national and regional processes of identity formation in the light of the recent political developments in Central and Eastern Europe. Wir freuen uns, von April bis Juni 2018 zwei Prisma Ukraïna Visiting Fellows begrüßen zu dürfen, die während ihres Aufenthalts an den Instituten der Verbundsmitglieder arbeiten werden:

Olga Linkiewicz (Historisches Institut der Polnischen Akademie der Wissenschaften) ist in dieser Zeit am Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung in Potsdam assoziiert und forscht an ihrem Projekt »Scientists as Intermediaries: Studies of Ethnicity and Race in Poland and the Interchange of Knowledge, 1918–1952«.

Yuliya Yurchuk (Södertörn-Universität, Stockholm) wird mit einem Projekt zum Thema »Propaganda and Information Management in the Ukraine-Russia Conflict: The Role of Historians in Turbulent Times« am Zentrum für Osteuropa- und internationale Studien (ZOIS) forschen.

Die Konferenz befasst sich mit der Repräsentation von Geschichte und Erinnerung in Schulbüchern, Museen und Denkmälern in Polen, der Ukraine und Russland. Sie wird mit dem DHI Warschau und in Kooperation mit Prisma Ukraïna und der Universität Genf organisiert.

The conference will discuss representations of history and memory in school textbooks, museums, and memorials in Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. It is organized by the German Historical Institute in Warsaw in cooperation with Prisma Ukraïna and the University of Geneva.


Workshop
»At Home: Jews and Muslims in Eastern Europe«
28.–29. Juni 2018, Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14, 14193 Berlin

Obwohl die Mehrheit der europäischen Jüdinnen und Juden sowie der Musliminnen und Muslime in Südost- oder Osteuropa beheimatet ist oder war, spielen die Erfahrungen mit religiösem Pluralismus in den zeitgenössischen europäischen Debatten um Migration, Integration, religiöse Differenz oder zum Verhältnis zwischen Staat und Religionsgemeinschaften kaum eine Rolle. Prisma Ukraïna und die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Osteuropakunde laden WissenschaftlerInnen ein, über die historischen Vermächtnisse von Imperien (osmanisch, russisch, habsburgisch oder sowjetisch), Fragen von Reform und Orthodoxie, von Prozessen der Konfessionalisierung sowie über die Politik von Religion, Ethnizität und Minderheit und die Erfahrungen der Jüdinnen und Juden sowie der Musliminnen und Muslime im Osten Europas zu diskutieren. Armina Omerika (Institut für Studien der Kultur und Religion des Islam, Universität Frankfurt) und Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern (Northwestern University, Evanston) werden Keynote-Vorträge halten.

Even though the majority of European Jews and Muslims are or were native to Southeast and East Europe, the experiences of religious pluralism hardly play a role in contemporary European debates about migration, integration, religious difference, or the relation between state and religious communities. Prisma Ukraïna and the German Association for East European Studies (DGO) invite scholars to discuss historical legacies of empires (Ottoman, Russian, Habsburg, Soviet), questions of reform and orthodoxy, processes of confessionalization, as well as politics, ethnicity and minority, and the experiences of Jews and Muslims in Eastern Europe.
Armina Omerika (Institut für Studien der Kultur und Religion des Islam, Universität Frankfurt) and Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern (Northwestern University, Evanston) will give keynote lectures.
The call for papers is open until 15 April 2018.

Philological Encounters

Die neue Ausgabe der Zeitschrift Philological Encounters erscheint in Kürze bei Brill! Die Sonderausgabe “Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Philological Encounters” wird von Islam Dayeh (Freie Universität Berlin), Pascale Rabault-Feuerhahn (CNRS-École normale supérieure, Paris) und Umar Ryad (KU Leuven) herausgegeben. Philological Encounters entstand 2016 aus dem Forschungsprogramm Zukunftsphilologie und widmet sich seitdem der historischen und philosophischen Kritik der Philologie.

Die Zeitschrift fördert kritische und komparative Perspektiven mit dem Ziel, Textforschung und sprachwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen aus der ganzen Welt einzubeziehen. Bis zum 31. The new special issue of the journal Philological Encounters will shortly be published with Brill! New Books

Im Januar 2018 startete auf dem TRAFO-Blog die Reihe »New Books«. Sie bietet Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus dem Umfeld des Forums, seiner Mitgliedseinrichtungen und der Max Weber Stiftung die Möglichkeit, ihre aktuellen Publikationen anhand von Leitfragen vorzustellen. Die ersten veröffentlichten Beiträge kamen von Joseph Ben Prestel, Postdoc-Fellow am Orient-Institut Beirut, und EUME/AvH-Fellow Michael Allan.

In January 2018, we have started the series “New Books” on our TRAFO Blog. It offers researchers from the Forum’s network, its member institutions and the Max Weber Foundation the opportunity to present their latest publications. First contributions came from Joseph Ben Prestel, Postdoc-Fellow at the Orient Institute Beirut, and EUME/AvH-Fellow Michael Allan.


»The 1979 Moment in the Middle East«

Demnächst startet auf TRAFO zudem eine kuratierte Themenreihe zu Thema »The 1979 Moment in the Middle East«. Die Beiträge sind aus einem Workshop hervorgegangen, der im Juni 2017 am Forum stattfand und sich mit den späten 1970er-Jahren als Epoche des kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Wandels im Nahen und Mittleren Osten befasste. Gastredakteur der Reihe ist Amir Moosavi (EUME/VW-Stiftung/Mellon-Fellow 2016/17).

In spring, the curated series “The 1979 Moment in the Middle East” will start on the TRAFO Blog. The articles have emerged from a workshop that was held in June at the Forum and discussed the late 1970s as an epoch of cultural and social change in the Near and Middle East. Guest editor is Amir Moosavi (EUME/VW-Stiftung/Mellon Fellow 2016/17).
