Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,
mit dem Forschungsverbund »Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe« setzt das Forum in Zukunft einen neuen Schwerpunkt. Durch das Prisma der Ukraine – wörtlich »Grenzgebiet« – will der Forschungsverbund neue transregionale Perspektiven auf Europa und seine Nachbarregionen entwickeln und so zu einer Stärkung der Osteuropa- Forschung beitragen. Prisma Ukraïna setzt die erfolgreich begonnene Arbeit der Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative (BBUI) fort und wird seit Oktober 2016 vom Berliner Senat gefördert. In der Ringvorlesung des Verbunds werden Ansichten auf die Revolutionen und Umbrüche in Mittel- und Osteuropa diskutiert. Mehr Informationen finden Sie hier.
Mit diesem Newsletter erhalten Sie die neue Ausschreibung des Ideenwettbewerbs, mit dem die Max Weber Stiftung und wir – mit Unterstützung des BMBF – Wissenschaftler*innen einladen, um innovative Forschungsfragen und Projektideen in transregionaler Perspektive zu testen und weiterzuentwickeln. Unser neues Vorhaben »Prisma Ukraïna« ist in der Sequenz eines solchen Workshops und einer Akademie entwickelt worden. In den letzten Monaten wurden über den Ideenwettbewerb Fragen der Ernährungssicherheit jenseits des Nord-Südkonflikts oder neue Muster der Migration und Grenzziehungen zwischen den Amerikas und im Mittelmeerraum debattiert. In den kommenden Monaten bieten wir Wissenschaftler*innen die Möglichkeit für Diskussionen darüber, wie das Mittelmeer als Raum und Bühne einer geteilten Geschichte stärkeren Eingang in die Schulbücher in Europa und dem Nahen Osten finden kann, was die historische Klimaforschung über den Zusammenhang zwischen klimatischem und gesellschaftlichen Wandel zu sagen hat oder wie sich das Recht zu Fragen der globalen Verteilung von öffentlichen Gütern und Lasten verhält.
Während die explorativen Workshops und Akademien intensive Diskussion in einem begrenzten Kreis von Teilnehmer*innen ermöglichen sollen, machen wir unsere Arbeit u. a. über den TRAFO-Blog, den wir gemeinsam mit unseren Kolleg*innen von der Max Weber Stiftung und dem Verein CrossArea betreiben, transparent und stellen wissenschaftlich fundierte Ansichten auf Fragen einer globalisierten Welt einer größeren Öffentlichkeit vor. Die monatliche Leserschaft ist inzwischen auf über 6000 angewachsen. Auf dem Blog können Sie neue Berichte und Gespräche, z. In den Forschungsprogrammen Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europa (EUME) und Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices werden die Debatten um die Auswirkungen der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche im Nahen Osten, um Fragen einer Kultur und Politik des Überlebens unter den Bedingungen von Krieg, Autoritarismus und Exil, sowie die Aushandlung von Konzepten einer transkulturellen Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte fortgeführt. Wir freuen uns zum Jahresbeginn neue Fellows aus Kanada, Russland, China, den USA, der Ukraine, dem Libanon und Ägypten zu begrüßen.

With the “Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe”, the Forum will have a new emphasis in the future. Through the prism of Ukraine – literally: “border region” – the research network aims to develop new transregional perspectives on Europe and its neighboring regions, thereby contributing to strengthening research on Eastern Europe. Prisma Ukraïna continues the successfully begun work of the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative (BBUI) and has received financial assistance from the Berlin Senate. The network’s lecture series discusses views on the revolutions and upheavals in Central and Eastern Europe. Soon you will find more information here.
With this newsletter, you receive the new call for submissions to the idea competition with which the Max Weber Foundation and we – with support from the BMBF – invite researchers to test and further develop innovative research questions and project ideas that have a transregional perspective. Our new project “Prisma Ukraïna” was developed in the sequence of such a workshop and an academy. Through the idea competition, in recent months issues of food security beyond the North-South conflict and new patterns of migration between the Americas and in the Mediterranean realm have been debated. In the coming months, we offer researchers the possibility to discuss how the Mediterranean, as the space and stage of a divided history, can find greater entry in European and Middle Eastern schoolbooks; what historical climatology has to say about the connection between climatic and societal change; and how law relates to issues of the global distribution of public goods and burdens.
While the exploratory workshops and academies aim to make intense discussion possible in a limited circle of participants, we also make our work transparent and present scientifically based views on questions about a globalized world to a broader public via our TRAFO blog, which we operate together with our colleagues at the Max Weber Foundation and the association CrossArea. In the meantime, our monthly readership has grown to more than 6,000. In the blog, you can read new reports and discussions, for example by Sarah Sippel (Leipzig) on “Envisioning the Future of Food Across North-South Divides”, Xóchitl Bada (Chicago) on “New Migration Patterns in the Western Hemisphere”, William Carruthers (DHI London) on “Heritage, Culture and Trading Zones”, and Razak Khan (Göttingen) on “Rethinking ‘National Culture’ of India: An Entangled Indo-German Intellectual History”.
The research programs “Europe in the Middle East – The Near East in Europe” (EUME) and “Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices” continue the debates about the effects of political and societal upheavals in the Middle East; issues of a culture and politics of survival under the conditions of war, authoritarianism, and exile; and the negotiation of concepts of a transcultural history of art and culture. At the beginning of the year, we look forward to greeting new Fellows from Canada, Russia, China, the USA, Ukraine, Lebanon, and Egypt.

»Redistribution and the Law in an Antagonistic World«

Das Recht von Fragen der Verteilung von Gütern, Aufgaben, Verantwortung und Zugängen in einer polarisierten Welt – »Redistribution and the Law in an Antagonistic World« – ist das Thema der nächsten transregionalen Akademie, die vom 21. bis 30. August 2017 an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin stattfinden wird. Sie wird von einer Gruppe von Rechtswissenschaftler*innen geleitet, der Isabel Feichtner (Julius Maximilians Universität Würzburg), Philipp Dann (Humboldt-Universität Berlin), Jochen von Bernstorff (Universität Tübingen), Surabhi Ranganathan (University of Cambridge), Celine Tan (University of Warwick) und Arnulf Becker Lorca (Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.) angehören. Die Akademie wird vom Forum Transregionale Studien und der Max Weber Stiftung gemeinsam organisiert und durch Mittel des BMBF gefördert. Wir laden Doktorandinnen, Doktoranden und Postdocs der Rechts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften, der Politologie, Geschichte, Anthropologie und benachbarter Disziplinen ein, sich für die Teilnahme zu bewerben.

“Redistribution and the Law in an Antagonistic World”
is the theme of the next transregional academy, which will be held at the Humboldt University Berlin from 21 to 30 August 2017. It will be led by a group of legal scholars that include Ulrike Feichtner (Universität Würzburg), Philipp Dann (HU Berlin), and Jochen von Bernstorff (University of Tübingen). The academy will be jointly organized by the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Foundation, with funding from the BMBF. We invite doctoral candidates and postdocs in the legal and economic sciences, political science, history, anthropology, and neighboring disciplines to apply to participate.

Gemeinsam mit der Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (MWS) laden wir dieses Jahr erneut Wissenschaftler*innen ein, sich mit innovativen Forschungsfragen und Projektideen unter transregionaler Perspektive für die Ausrichtung eines Workshops bei uns zu bewerben. Wir bieten offene und flexible Veranstaltungsformate, starke wissenschaftliche Netzwerke sowie konzeptionelle, organisatorische und finanzielle Unterstützung. Unsere explorativen Workshops bieten Wissenschaftler*innen mit unterschiedlicher regionaler Expertise einen Rahmen, um in kleinerem Kreis neue Ideen und Fragestellungen zu entwickeln und zu testen.
Vorschläge können von promovierten Wissenschaftler*innen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eingereicht werden, die einer deutschen Universität oder außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtung (auch im Ausland) angehören.

Together with the Max Weber Foundation – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (German humanities institute abroad – MWS), again this year we invite researchers with innovative research questions and project ideas that have a transregional perspective to apply to organize a workshop with us. We offer open and flexible organizational formats, powerful research networks, and conceptual, organizational, and financial support. Our exploratory workshops offer researchers with different regional expertise a framework for developing and testing new ideas and questions.
Proposals can be submitted by researchers with a doctorate in the humanities or social sciences who belong to a German university or non-university research institute (also abroad). The deadline for submissions is 26 March 2017.

Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe
Der interdisziplinäre Forschungsverbund Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe geht auf die Initiative des Langzeitfellows des Forums Transregionale Studien Dr. Andrii Portnov zurück. Er wird von verschiedenen Berliner und Brandenburger Forschungseinrichtungen getragen und führt unter Leitung Dr. Portnovs die Arbeit der 2015 gegründeten Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative (BBUI) fort. Die Ukraine steht als Forschungsgegenstand im Zentrum des gemeinsamen Interesses und fungiert gleichzeitig als »Prisma«, um transregionale Perspektiven zu eröffnen.
Prisma Ukraïna – Research Network Eastern Europe wird seit Oktober 2016 vom Land Berlin gefördert. Im Rahmen der Prisma Ukraïna wird die jährliche Vorlesungsreihe fortgesetzt sowie – mit Unterstützung der Kurt und Marga Möllgaard-Stiftung – das Fellowship-Programm der BBUI. Weitere Workshops und Konferenzen sind in Planung.
The interdisciplinary research network Prisma Ukraïna—Research Network Eastern Europe goes back to the initiative of long-term Fellow of the Forum Transregionale Studien Dr. Andrii Portnov. It involves numerous institutions in Berlin and Brandenburg and continues, under the direction of Dr. Andrii Portnov, the work of the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative (BBUI) that was founded in 2015. Ukraine figures as both the central research object and a “prism” opening up transregional perspectives.
Since October 2016 Prisma Ukraïna—Research Network Eastern Europe has been funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises. It continues the BBUI’s lectures series and fellowship program – the latter with financial support from the Kurt and Marga Möllgaard-Foundation. Further workshops and events are currently in planning.

Wir freuen uns über die Ankunft von drei weiteren EUME-Fellows, die ab Januar und Februar 2017 ihre Forschungsaufenthalte in Berlin beginnen werden:
Samer Frangie (Assoziierter EUME-Fellow 2016/17) ist Associate Professor am Institut für Politikwissenschaft und Öffentliche Verwaltung der American University of Beirut und arbeitet zum Aufstieg und Fall der libanesischen Linken.
Die Politikwissenschaftlerin Alia Mossallam (EUME-Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2017/18) lehrt an der American University in Cairo (AUC) und dem Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (CILAS) und beschäftigt sich mit alternativen Geschichtsnarrativen in Ägypten. Michael Allan (EUME-CNMS-Fellow der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2017/18) ist Associate Professor für Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der University of Oregon. Er war bereits im akademischen Jahr 2011/12 EUME-Fellow, ist Autor von In the Shadow of World Literature und arbeitet an seinem zweiten Buchprojekt, in dem er den globalen Routen des frühen Kinos nachspürt.
Erfreulich ist auch die große Zahl an Büchern und Artikeln von EUME-Fellows, die in den letzten Monaten erschienen sind. Eine Auswahl von Titeln findet sich in Abschnitt 4 dieses Newsletters.
We are happy to announce the arrival of three new EUME Fellows in January and February 2017 who will come to Berlin to work on their research projects on the rise and fall of the Lebanese left, alternative historiographical narratives in Egypt and the global routes of early cinema. Samer Frangie (Associated EUME Fellow 2016/17) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies and Public Administration at the American University of Beirut. He has been a EUME Fellow in 2013/14. The political scientist Alia Mossallam (EUME Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung) teaches at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and the Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (CILAS). Der Jahrgang 2016/17 ist mit der Ankunft von Yanlong Guo, Archäologe und Kunsthistoriker, von der University of British Columbia, Canada, und Peter Christensen, Assistant Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der University of Rochester, U.K., nun vollständig. Während Yanlong Guo zum Gebrauch von Spiegeln im Bronzezeitlichen China arbeitet, beschäftigt sich Peter Christiansen mit dem durch das deutsche Reich geförderten Bau eines Eisenbahnsystems im osmanischen Reich.
Die Seminare zur Vorstellung der einzelnen Forschungsprojekte der Fellows werden im kommenden Jahr weitergeführt.
With the arrival of Yanlong Guo, archaeologist and art historian from the University of British Columbia, Canada and Peter Christensen, Assistant Professor for Art History at the University of Rochester, U.K., the “class” of 2016/17 is now complete. Yanlong Guo is developing a transregional perspective on the history of Chinese consumption and art in the example of the circulation of bronze mirrors, while Peter Christiansen is exploring the interplay between colonialism, infrastructural innovation, and sociopolitical changes. He is researching the role that the rail network in the Ottoman Empire, fostered by the German Empire, played in the development of new ideas of politics, geography, architecture, and orientation there. The seminars introducing the Fellows’ individual research projects will be continued in the coming year.

ART HISTORIES TRAVELLING SEMINAR
Vom 17. Februar bis 01. März 2017 wird das diesjährige Travelling Seminar mit dem Titel »Aesthetic Practices and Geographies of Time in Central Mexico: From Acient American Cultures to Early Colonialism, Modernity and the Contemporary« stattfinden. Es wird in Kooperation mit David Colmenares (Columbia University und CAHIM Fellow, KHI/SMB) durchgeführt und von den Programmdirektoren Hannah Baader und Gerhard Wolf gleitet.
Geplant sind u.a. Besuche der Orte Mexiko-Stadt, Tepotzotlán, Acolman, Teotihuacán, Puebla, Yanhuitlan, Coixtlahuaca, Teposcolula und Oaxaca, zahlreicher Museen und Institutionen, sowie ein Seminar am Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas der UNAM (Nationale Autonome Universität von Mexiko/ Mexiko-Stadt).

Zur Vorbereitung auf das Travelling Seminar diente die Veranstaltung »Wissensproduktion und Kulturtransfers: Latein Amerika in transregionalen Kontexten« am Ibero-Amerikanischen Institut (IAI) Berlin am 15. Dez 2016 u.a. mit Barbara Göbel, Ricarda Musser, Iken Paap und Friedhelm Schmidt-Welle. Im Mittelpunkt standen Projekte, die sich aus einer transregionalen Perspektive mit der Geschichte und den Kulturen Mexikos beschäftigen.
As a preparation for the Travelling Seminar 2017 to Mexico, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (IAI) in Berlin organized the seminar “Knowledge Production and Cultural Transfers: Latin America in Transregional Contexts” for the Art Histories Fellows. The director Barbara Göbel and her colleagues Ricarda Musser, Iken Paap, and Friedhelm Schmidt-Welle introduced Art Histories to the work of the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut and gave an overview on the Institute and current projects related to the history and cultures of Mexico in a transregional perspective.

»This essay explores Marie NDiaye’s novel Trois Femmes Puissantes about the trials of three loosely connected women, who reveal the traffic links between France and Senegal. Set apart from other critiques of the novel, this paper focuses on the last “strong woman” of the triptych—Khady Demba—as an allegorical figure of today’s African migrants pushed out of a homeland that refuses to provide for them and toward perilous journeys.«

Wir begrüßen am Forum drei neue Mitarbeiter*innen und freuen uns auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Karin Casanova im Bereich Planung und Organisation, Alix Winter für Wissenschaftliche Initiativen und Veranstaltungen sowie Moritz Buchner im Bereich Wissenschaftskommunikation. Christian Boulanger, der viele Jahre für den Bereich Planung und Organisation zuständig war, arbeitet nun als Wissenschaftlicher Koordinator für den Forschungsverbund »Recht im Kontext«, Stefanie Rentsch, unsere langjährige Wissenschaftskommunikatorin wurde als Studienleiterin in das Kollegium des Kirchentages berufen. Wir freuen uns mit ihnen über die Karrieresprünge.
We greet three new staff members at the Forum and look forward to working together with Karin Casanova in the area Planning and Organization, Alix Winter in Research Initiatives and Events, and Moritz Buchner in the area of Research Communication. Christian Boulanger, who was responsible for Planning and Organization for many years, now works as Academic Coordinator for the research association “Recht im Kontext” (Law in Context); Stefanie Rentsch, who was our Research Communicator for many years, has been appointed Director of Studies in the College of the Church Conference. We share their joy over these career advances.
