Editorial

Mit Explorativen Workshops und Transregionalen Akademien schafft das Forum gemeinsam mit seinem Kooperationspartner, der Max Weber Stiftung, Freiräume, die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern ermöglichen, institutionen- und disziplinenübergreifend an gemeinsamen Themen zu arbeiten. Innovative Fragestellungen und Projekte können getestet und in transregionaler Perspektive weiterentwickelt werden. Im Rahmen eines Ideenwettbewerbs konnten sich Postdocs mit ihren Projektvorschlägen bewerben. Die Gewinnerinnen und Gewinner stehen nun fest.

Wie schon im vergangenen Jahr werden wir unser Engagement für Fragen des sozialen und politischen Umbruchs im Nahen Osten und in Osteuropa sowie für eine transregionale Kunstgeschichte fortsetzen. Unsere besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird 2016 dem Mittelmeerraum und der Flüchtlingsthematik gelten. Diese thematischen Schwerpunkte spiegeln sich unter anderem in unserer diesjährigen Jahreskonferenz »Making, Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture« wider, die wir im Oktober 2016 gemeinsam mit dem Exzellenzcluster »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« (Heidelberg), der Max Weber Stiftung und dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut ausrichten werden.

Unsere Veranstaltungen und Schwerpunktthemen begleiten und dokumentieren wir über unsere wissenschaftlichen Blogs und mit Publikationen. Sie sind herzlich eingeladen, die Plattform und Freiräume, die das Forum bietet, auch weiterhin zu nutzen!

With Explorative Workshops and Transregional Academies, the Forum and its cooperation partner, the Max Weber Foundation, create possibilities for researchers to work transdisciplinarily on common themes across institutions. Innovative questions and projects can be tested and further developed in a transregional perspective. Through an open call for applications, postdocs were able to submit their project proposals. The winners of this idea competition have now been selected.

As in the past, we will maintain our commitment to questions of the social and political changes in the Middle East and Eastern Europe and to transregional art histories. In 2016, we will focus special attention on the Mediterranean realm and the theme of refugees. These thematic emphases are also reflected in the topic of our annual conference this year, “Making, sustaining, breaking – the politics of heritage and culture”, which we will hold in October 2016 in collaboration with the Excellence Cluster “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” (Heidelberg), the Max Weber Foundation, and the German Archaeological Institute.

We accompany and document our events and thematic emphases with our research blogs and publications. You are cordially invited to continue using the platform and possibilities that the Forum offers!

Ideenwettbewerb 2016 / Open Call

Für das Jahr 2016 wurden für das Format der Explorativen Workshops folgende Themen ausgewählt:

»All You Can Do with Catalogs: Accessing, Organizing, Disseminating Local and Global Knowledge (15th-19th Centuries)« lautet der Themenvorschlag von Paola Molino (Alexander von Humboldt Post-doctoral Fellow an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München). Der Workshop wird zusammen mit Martina Siebert (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin — Ostasienabteilung), Guy Burak (New York University) und Dagmar Riedel (Columbia University) organisiert werden. Im Zentrum stehen Fragen der Systematisierung und Kategorisierung von Wissen in vormodernen Gesellschaften.

Gerrit J. Schenk (Technical University Darmstadt) und Martin Bauch (German Historical Institute Rom) hinterfragen den globalen Klimawandel in einem Workshop mit dem Titel »The Crisis of the 14th Century: ‘Teleconnections’ between Environmental and Societal Change«.

In dem Workshop »Envisioning the Future of Food Across North-South Divides: Transregional Food Networks and Movements« wird Sarah Ruth Sippel (Centre for Area Studies at the University of Leipzig) die Frage behandeln, wie Landwirtschaft und Ernährung zukünftig organisiert und gesichert werden können.

In dem Wettbewerb wurde zudem über eine Transregionale Akademie entschieden:

»De-Framing the Mediterranean from the Twenty-first Century. Places, Routes and Actors« ist das Thema einer von Leyla Dakhli (Centre Marc Bloch, Berlin) konzipierten Sommerakademie. Sie wird, ausgehend von den aktuellen Entwicklungen in Europa und seinen Nachbarregionen mit NachwuchswissenschaftlerInnen über eine Re-Formulierung tradierter Konzeptionen des Mittelmeerraums diskutieren.

The following themes were chosen for the format of Explorative Workshops in 2016:

“All You Can Do With Catalogs: Accessing, Organizing, Disseminating Local and Global Knowledge (15th-19th Centuries)” is the theme suggested by Paola Molino (Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich). The workshop will be organized together with Martina Siebert (Berlin State Library – East Asia Department/Independent scholar), Guy Burak (New York University) und Dagmar Riedel (Columbia University). In focus are questions of the systematization and categorization of knowledge in premodern societies.

Gerrit J. Schenk (Technical University Darmstadt) and Martin Bauch (German Historical Institute Rome) explore the background of global climate change in a Workshop titled “The Crisis of the 14th Century: ‘Teleconnections’ between Environmental and Societal Change”.

The competition also decided on a Transregional Academy:

Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative

Die neue Initiative des Forums nimmt an Fahrt auf. Die BBUI bündelt die Kompetenz zu Geschichte, Kultur und Politik der Ukraine und ihrer Nachbarländer, die im Raum Berlin-Brandenburg vorhanden ist. Der Austausch mit WissenschaftlerInnen und Intellektuellen aus der Region soll zu einem besseren Verständnis der aktuellen Entwicklungen beitragen.

The Forum’s new initiative is gathering momentum. The BBUI bundles competence available in the Berlin-Brandenburg region on the history, culture, and politics of Ukraine and its neighboring countries. Exchange with researchers from the region aims to contribute to a better understanding of current developments.

TRANSREGIONALE AKADEMIE / TRANSREGIONAL ACADEMY
»Beyond History and Identity: New Perspectives on Aesthetics, Politics, and Society in Eastern Europe«
(December 2015) leitete die Initative ein. Auf unserem Academies-Blog werden fortlaufend die Ergebnisse der Akademie »Beyond History« veröffentlicht: Berichte von den Eindrücken der TeilnehmerInnen (wie beispielsweise »The Berlin Winter Academy in 5 Words… and 5 Concepts«), Interviews, Videos, Fotos sowie einen Mitschnitt des Vortrags der Historikerin Jane Burbank.

The Transregional Academy “Beyond History and Identity: New Perspectives on Aesthetics, Politics, and Society in Eastern Europe” (December 2015) launched the initiative. Our Academies Blog continuously publishes the results of the Academy “Beyond History”: reports on the participants’ impressions (for example “The Berlin Winter Academy in 5 Words… and 5 Concepts”), interviews, videos, photos, and a recording of the lecture hold by the historian Jane Burbank.

FELLOW
Die erste Kurzzeitstipendiatin der Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative ist seit Januar 2016 die ukrainische Journalistin Nataliya Gumenyuk. Sie wird in Berlin an ihrem Forschungsprojekt »Bridging East and West in Germany: Lessons Learned after the Separation« arbeiten.

Since January 2016, the first short-time Visiting Fellow of the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative has been the Ukrainian journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk. She will work in Berlin on her research project “Bridging East and West in Germany: Lessons Learned after the Separation”.

PHILOLOGICAL ENCOUNTERS
Unter dem Titel Philological Encounters ist aus der Arbeit des Programms Zukunftsphilologie eine eigene Zeitschrift entstanden. Der erste Band der von dem Leiter des Programms, Islam Dayeh, herausgegebenen Reihe ist jetzt im Brill-Verlag erschienen. Unter den Beiträgern der ersten Nummer sind Sheldon Pollock, Markus Messling, Shamil Jeppie und Rajeev Kinra.

A dedicated periodical titled Philological Encounters has emerged from the work of the Zukunftsphilologie program. The first volume of the series edited by the Director of the program, Islam Dayeh, has now appeared with the Brill publishing house. Among the contributors to the first issue are Sheldon Pollock, Markus Messling, Shamil Jeppie, and Rajeev Kinra.

Die Akademie knüpft an die EUME-Sommerakademie »Conflict and Mobility: Urban Space, Youth and Social Transformations« (2014, Rabat) an und ist eingebettet in längerfristige Forschungsschwerpunkte an der Universität Marburg und unseres EUME-Forschungsprogramms zu den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen im Nahen Osten.

This Academy follows the model of our academies and is embedded in longer-term research foci of the University of Marburg and our EUME research program on the political and societal upheavals in the Middle East. CONVERSATIONS IN TRANSREGIONAL ART HISTORIES
Das Programm Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices hat ein neues Online-Format entwickelt. In »Conversations in Transregional Art Histories« werden Fellows und Gäste von Art Histories in multimedialen Beiträgen ihre Forschungsthemen vorstellen und diskutieren. Die Reihe beginnt mit einem Gespräch zwischen Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby und Sugata Ray (beide University of California, Berkeley), das im Anschluss an die Veranstaltung »Body and Empire. A Conversation« am Forum Transregionale Studien aufgezeichnet wurde. Sie wird regelmäßig um neue Video- und Audio-Beiträge erweitert.

The research program Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices has launched a new online format: “Conversations in Transregional Art Histories”. In multimedia contributions, Art Histories Fellows and guests will present and discuss their research topics. The series will start with a talk between Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby and Sugata Ray (both at University of California, Berkeley), which was recorded following the Art Histories event “Body and Empire. A Conversation” at the Forum Transregionale Studien. It will be updated regularly with new video and audio content and can be found here.

ECOLOGIES, AESTHETICS AND ART HISTORIES
Aus Anlass der internationalen Tagung “Ecologies, Aesthetics, and Histories of Art I”, die von Hannah Baader, Sugata Ray und Gerhard Wolf am Kunsthistorischen Institut Florenz organisiert wurde, reisten die Art Histories Fellows im Dezember 2015 nach Florenz und Padua. Sie hatten dort die Gelegenheit, mit Dipesh Chakrabarty (Chicago) u.a. über ästhetische Praktiken und Ökologie zu diskutieren. Bei der Einführung in die Stadt- und Kulturgeschichte wurden u.a. die Sammlung anatomischer Wachsmodelle im Naturkundemuseum La Specola, das anatomische Theater im Palazzo Bo und die Reliquien in der Basilica di Sant'Antonio besucht.

On the occasion of the international conference “Ecologies, Aesthetics, and Histories of Art I” organized by Hannah Baader, Sugata Ray and Gerhard Wolf at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence, Max-Planck-Institut, the fellows had the opportunity to discuss with Dipesh Chakrabarty (Chicago), among others, on Aesthetic Practices and Ecology.During their stay, the Art Histories Fellows visited the collection of anatomical wax models in the Natural History Museum La Specola, the anatomical theater at the Palazzo Bo, and catholic body relics of the today transultural Saint Sant'Antonio.

Zum gleichen Themenkomplex wird Hannah Baader am 5. Februar 2016 eine Sektion zu »Geoaesthetics in Early Modern and Colonial Worlds« auf der Jahrestagung der College Art Association (CAA) in Washington leiten.

Remaining in the same research area Hannah Baader will co-chair the section “Geoaesthetics in Early Modern and Colonial Worlds” at the Annual Conference of the College Art Association (CAA) in Washington on 5 Feb 2016.

Der Ethnologe Arjun Appadurai hat unsere letztjährige Jahrestagung »Global Modernisms: Contiguities, Infrastructures and Aesthetic Practices« (November 2015) eingeleitet. Den Videomitschnitt seines Vortrags »Indian Popular Cinema in the Making of a Decolonized Modernity« finden Sie hier.

The anthropologist Arjun Appadurai launched our annual conference last year, “Global Modernisms: Contiguities, Infrastructures and Aesthetic Practices” (November 2015). The video recording of his lecture “Indian Popular Cinema in the Making of a Decolonized Modernity” can be found here.
