WeberWorldCafé “Citizens, Bloggers, Ambassadors”

“Citizens, Bloggers, Ambassadors: New Media and Actors of Diplomacy in the 21st Century”: the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Stiftung invite you to the first WeberWorldCafé in Bonn on 28 April 2014.

The Internet and, particularly, the Web 2.0 have fundamentally changed the global diplomatic and political stage. Governments only have limited control over the flow of information anymore and now find themselves in a vastly complex network of actors in what had been their former jurisdiction. Diplomacy today in a globalized and technologically advanced world means representing in the host country realities that, due to their increasing complexity, are split into separate fields of expertise. The internationalization of specialized policies leads diplomatic missions to become nodal points that must bring together and orchestrate a complex network of governmental and non-governmental representatives abroad without having the claim or the capacities to exclusively represent the interests of the home state or to be the leading expert in all discourses.

At the WeberWorldCafé, experts from different disciplines will get a chance to meet with young scholars and employees of international organizations to discuss aspects of classic diplomacy and diplomatic history as well as digital, cultural, and medial diplomacy.

Further information about the program and the participants is assembled on the blogs “WeberWorldCafé. Transregionale Dialoge zwischen Wissenschaft, Gesellschaft und Kultur” and Trafo—Beiträge zur transregionalen Forschung”.

The WeberWorldCafé will be held at the Pantheon Casino in Bonn on 28 April 2014, starting at 5:30 pm. The debate will be in English and German.
