The Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine caused enormous displacement and destruction of residential infrastructure adding a housing crisis to other multiple challenges faced by the country. The situation has been aggravated by systemic challenges in the Ukrainian housing sphere and limited interventions to alleviate the housing needs of the internally displaced people (IDPs). The IDPs have to rely on the patchwork temporary shelter solutions coordinately by local governance, civil society, and international aid organizations or turn to unregulated rental markets with precarious conditions. The presentation will overview the housing system for IDPs in Ukraine and the major problems of the IDPs in accessing affordable and secure housing. Particular attention will be given to the development of the rental market in Western Ukrainian cities and the housing pathways of the displaced navigating between market and non-market options, returning home, and moving abroad.
