Hybrid event

Viktoria Sereda and Valeria Lazarenko discuss the book "Displacement in War-Torn Ukraine: State, Displacement and Belonging" (Cambridge University Press, 2023).

With this book, part of Cambridge Elements in Global Development Studies, sociologist Viktoria Sereda offers a multi-scalar perspective on the transformational effects of war and dislocation on people's sense of belonging. It begins with an examination of the brief historical and socio-demographic profiles of Crimea and the Donbas, stages of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, main explanatory frameworks as presented in the scholarly literature and policy reports, with a critical re-evaluation of identity-based explanations, and the directions of conflict-driven displacement flows. It examines state failures and the role of internal displacement governance in shaping new lines of social inclusion or exclusion through the production of multiple physical, symbolic and bureaucratic borders. It discusses Ukraine's civil society response to IDP dislocation and IDPs' engagement through various formal and non-formal networks. The final section explores the multidimensional and complex (dis)connections that IDPs experience with regard to their imagined past, their new places of residence and the social groups perceived as important in their hierarchies of belonging.

Viktoriya Sereda is a sociologist, who is currently Senior Fellow and Director of the research group PRISMA UKRAÏNA: War, Migration and Memory at the Forum Transregionale Studien. Prior to this, she was a fellow at the Imre Kertesz Kolleg, University of Jena. She has been a senior research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 2020 and a professor in the Department of Sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University. In the spring semester of 2021, she was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Basel. Sereda has either led or participated in over 30 sociological research projects on Ukrainian society and its regional dimensions. From 2011 to 2017, she was the head of the sociological team for the project “Region, Nation and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary and Transcultural Reconceptualization of Ukraine”, organised by the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. In 2016–17 and 2019–20 she was the MAPA Research Fellow at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University, where she developed a digital atlas of social changes in Ukraine after the Euromaidan.

Valeria Lazarenko, PhD in Psychology, is postdoctoral researcher at Georg-Simmel Center for Metropolitan Studies (Humboldt Universität Berlin), and affiliated researcher of “Affective Societies” network at Freie Universität Berlin. In her doctoral thesis, she explored psychogeographic narratives and identities of internally displaced people in Ukraine. Currently, she is working on a project about subjective experiences of displacement from Ukraine to Berlin.
