Ukrainian Un/Certainties: The Impact of Displacement on Host and Home Societies
Public Roundtable Discussion with Ana Mijić (Universität Wien), Viktoria Sereda (VUIAS), and Oleksandra Bienert (Alliance of Ukrainian Organizations), moderated by Lidia Kuzemska (Academic Coordinator War, Migration, Memory Research Group)
Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14, 14193 Berlin, and online via Zoom
As we are quickly approaching the third anniversary of forced displacement from Ukraine due to the Russian full-scale invasion, we invite all interested members of the audience to a discussion dedicated to the impact of forced displacement from Ukraine on home and host societies with a particular focus on Germany and Austria.
Ukrainian displacement is a complex and entangled puzzle with a lot of uncertainties for individuals, institutions, societies. At the heart of it are fragmented lives of 6.7mln Ukrainians currently displaced abroad, including around 1mln in Germany. Their lives are punctuated not only by the fact of displacement per se, but also by the changing policies and attitudes of their host and home countries and societies, by strained cross-border family dynamics and blurred future aspirations. Most of all, they are fragmented by the unknowns of what comes next: in a year, when the war ends, when the life can become ‘whole again’.
During the discussion, the panellists will reflect on the short and long-term impact of displacement from Ukraine on the displaced persons and the host countries amidst migration anxieties in Europe. Furthermore, they will discuss to what extent comparisons and lessons learned from the previous situations of mass displacement in Europe might be useful in assessing current and future strategies to support the displaced from Ukraine in their plans.
The roundtable discussion is part of the workshop “Ukrainian Un/Certainties: Mobilities, Memories and Representations in Times of War”, organised by the research group Prisma Ukraїna: War, Migration, Memory at the Forum Transregionale Studien on 14–15 November. The research group and the workshop are generously supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the Berlin Senate Department for Higher Education and Research, Health and Long-Term Care.
