The Island in My Mind. Poetics and Politics of Isolation

convened by Kateryna Mishchenko (Prisma Ukraïna Visiting Fellow 2018)

Forum Transregionale Studien, Wallotstr. 14, 14193 Berlin

Paradiesruine, 05.2006 C-Print aus: PRORA, Sandra Schubert und Marcel Noack

The motif of island appears in today’s political imaginary with amazing regularity. In such cases as Brexit and the annexation of Crimea, human flows gravitating to European coasts change the political and social landscape of European countries and beyond. The rise of nationalisms and newly-emerging borders, both real and imagined, can be considered as manifestations of 'insular' politics as well. The utopian potential of the figure of island and its promise of 'the second chance' are shadowed by its semantics of isolation and enclosure.

Approaching histories of Crimea, Rügen, 'Archipelago Europe' and other insular entities, our workshop aims to analyze the ways in which isolation and isolationism can be inscribed in biographies of places and people, and seeks to explore the transfer from personal experience to political-isolationist trends and vice-versa. Drawing from artistic and theoretical perspectives, we will discuss isolation as a spatial, political and aesthetic construct, as well as look at the possibilities of its deconstruction.

The public part of the workshop will be dedicated to discussing the relationship of isolation to political subjectivity. Does isolation afford any possibility of empowerment for people or communities deprived of political participation? How can individual experience and artistic strategy be translatable to a new political agency? How can one beat a path away from isolation? These questions will be discussed by Marina Naprushkina and Yassin al-Haj Saleh.
