On The Border of Two Spaces: The Transformative Experience of Ukrainian Refugees in Germany
Presentation by Tetyana Panchenko (KIU Research Fellow, European University Viadrina) with the Prisma Ukraїna: War, Migration, Memory Research Group
Presentation of the preliminary results of a longitudinal study of the transformational experience of Ukrainian refugees in the process of their flight, adaptation and integration in Germany since the beginning of the war. Based on qualitative data from two rounds of in-depth interviews and quantitative data from 5-wave online surveys, the author presents some socio-economic characteristics of Ukrainian refugees in Germany, the reasons and circumstances of their flight, their daily practices of integration into the host society and their transnational activities, their expectations and intentions, and their changes over time.
The author is looking for answers to the following questions:
What models of adaptation do displaced people from Ukraine choose?
What are their plans for further stay in Germany and what determines them?
Why do some Ukrainians return without waiting for the war to end?
How do Ukrainian refugees see their mission in relation to Ukraine?
How do they see their contribution to Ukraine's recovery and how are they helping Ukraine now?
Tetyana Panchenko is a KIU Research Fellow at European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and a professor of political science at the Karazin Kharkiv National University (Kharkiv, Ukraine). From 2022 to 2024, she was a research specialist at the ifo Center for International Institutional Comparisons and Migration Research, ifo Institute Munich, where she studied integration strategies of refugees from Ukraine in Germany. She has participated in different research projects in social and political sciences, devoted comparative regionalism, subnational policy issues, voluntary and forced migration from Ukraine to Germany.
