Editorial
Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,
wir freuen uns, im Oktober 2016 mehr als 30 Postdoc-Wissenschaftlerinnen und -Wissenschaftler aus 18 Ländern am Forum begrüßen zu dürfen. Als Fellows erhalten sie die Möglichkeit, an ihren jeweiligen Projekten im Rahmen der Programme Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices. Kunstgeschichte und Ästhetische Praktiken, Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europa (EUME), der Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative (BBUI) sowie gemeinsam mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus Deutschland zu arbeiten.
Im akademischen Jahr 2016/2017 forschen die Forums-Fellows unter anderem zu Kunst und Politik in globaler Perspektive, nahöstlichem politischen Denken und zum Umgang mit Flüchtlingen in der Türkei und Deutschland. Im Rahmen des Forschungsprogramms EUME unterstützt das Forum zudem Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus der Türkei, die wegen ihrer Unterschrift unter die Petition der »Academics for Peace« von ihren Universitäten entlassen wurden. Über zwei von ihnen wurde im Berliner Tagesspiegel und im Spiegel berichtet. In der Broschüre »Programme und Fellows 2016/2017« und der Fellowdatenbank finden Sie ausführliche Informationen über die Karrierewege und Forschungsprojekte der Fellows.
Die Jahrestagung»Making, Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture« bildet den inhaltlichen Auftakt des diesjährigen Wintersemesters. Die Tagung wird vom 12. bis 14. Oktober 2016 an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg stattfinden und von uns gemeinsam mit der Max Weber Stiftung, dem Cluster of Excellence »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« sowie dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut ausgerichtet. Sie sind herzlich zur Teilnahme eingeladen.
Last but not least können wir mitteilen, dass die Leibniz Universität Hannover Mitglied am Forum geworden ist. Wir freuen uns auf die künftige Zusammenarbeit.

Dear readers,
we are pleased to welcome more than 30 postdoctoral researchers from 18 countries in October 2016. As Fellows, they have the opportunity to work on their respective projects in the framework of the programs Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices. Kunstgeschichte und Ästhetische Praktiken, Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe (EUME), the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative (BBUI) and together with colleagues from Germany.
In the academic year 2016/2017, the Forum Fellows will conduct research on art and politics from a global perspective, Middle Eastern political thinking, and how Turkey and Germany deal with refugees, among other subjects. In the framework of the EUME research program, the Forum also supports researchers from Turkey who were dismissed from their universities for signing the petition of the “Academics for Peace”. The Berlin Tagesspiegel and the Spiegel reported on two of them. In the brochure “Programs and Fellows 2016/2017” and in the Fellow data base, you will find extensive information on the career paths and research projects of the Fellows.
The annual conference “Making Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture” is the overture to this year’s winter semester. The conference will be held from October 12 to 14 at the Ruprecht Karls University Heidelberg, organized by us together with the Max Weber Foundation, the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”, and the German Archaeological Institute. You are cordially invited to take part in this event.
Last but not least, we are pleased to announce that the Leibniz University Hanover has become a member of the Forum. We look forward to future collaborations.

»Making, Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture«

Was bedeutet kulturelles Erbe heute? Welche Kräfte wirken im Prozess seiner Bestimmung, Bewahrung und auch seiner Zerstörung? Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unterschiedlichster Disziplinen wie Archäologie, Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie, Musikwissenschaft oder Anthropologie gehen der Frage nach, welchen komplexen Wechselwirkungen kulturelles Erbe im politischen und gesellschaftlichen Diskurs ausgesetzt ist. Die Jahreskonferenz 2016 wird vom Forum gemeinsam mit dem Cluster of Excellence »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« und der Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute und in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut konzipiert und organisiert. Die Einführungsvorträge werden von der Historikerin Nayanjot Lahiri (Delhi) sowie dem irakischen Wissenschaftler und Schriftsteller Sinan Antoon (New York University, EUME-Fellow 2008/09, Fellow des Wissenschaftskollegs zu Berlin in 2016/17) gehalten.

What does cultural heritage mean today? What forces are effective in the process of its determination, preservation, and destruction? Researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines, like archaeology, art history, philosophy, musicology, and anthropology, pursue the question of the complex interactions that cultural heritage is exposed to in political and societal discourses.
The keynote addresses will be given by the historian Nayanjot Lahiri (Delhi) and the scholar and novelist Sinan Antoon (New York University, EUME Fellow 2008/09, Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin 2016/17).

All You Can do With Catalogs: Accessing, Organizing, Disseminating Local and Global Knowledge (15th-19th Centuries)

Im Zentrum des Workshops steht die Frage, wie sich in der Frühmoderne Systeme und Instrumente der Wissensordnung, wie Kataloge, Indizes oder Bibliographien, entwickelt und verändert haben. In welche politischen, intellektuellen und sozioökonomischen Kontexte sind Sammlungen und ihre Kataloge oder Bibliographien globalgeschichtlich einzuordnen? Inwiefern geben sie Aufschluss über lokale und transregionale Ambitionen der herrschenden Eliten?

The workshop will explore shifts in the classification of knowledge in the pre-modern world, by examining the evolution of finding aids, such as catalogs, indices, card files, and bibliographies, in a global perspective. One of its aims is to re-address major questions in the field of knowledge organization, and access, adopting at the same time a local and global approach. On a second level, it will focus on questions of knowledge localization and dissemination in different world regions.

Wie sieht die in Zukunft der Landwirtschaft aus und wie kann die Versorgung mit Nahrungsmitteln organisiert werden? In dem Workshop sollen diese weltweit drängenden Fragen in transregionaler Perspektive untersucht werden. Es werden verschiedene Akteure zusammengebracht, die am Aufbau alternativer Beziehungen innerhalb des Ernährungssystems in unterschiedlichen Weltregionen beteiligt sind.

Prevailing food insecurity and the question how agriculture and food should be organized within society are at the very heart of food networks and movements, which have been emerging all over the world in recent years. This workshop aims to address transregional interlinkages and emerging synergies between those actors and groups of people who are building alternative food relationships in different parts of the world.

In recent years the concept of “diversity” has almost become a civic virtue as society continued to become more diverse due to, among other factors, increased mobility, less strict gender roles, improved living conditions and individualization processes. At the WeberWorldCafé, we want to further discuss what impact and effects diversity has – as well as examine the powers that constitute and produce diversity – by considering discourses on diversity, institutional frameworks, migration flows, and goals and interactions of individual actors.
The WeberWorldCafé “Diversity – Limits and Opportunities” is organized in cooperation with the German Institute for Japanese Studies Tokyo (DIJ), the Diversity Research Institute of the Georg-August-University Göttingen and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity.

Es sind insgesamt 8-9 Vorlesungstermine geplant, die sich von Oktober 2016 bis April/Mai 2017 erstrecken. ART HISTORIES WELCOME WEEKS
Anlässlich der Ankunft der neuen Art Histories Fellows 2016/17 im Oktober werden Hannah Baader und das Team von Art Histories die Fellows im Rahmen der Art Histories Welcome Weeks empfangen. In Kooperation mit CAHIM werden die Fellows ihre Forschungsvorhaben präsentieren. Darüber hinaus soll in grundlegende Themen der Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte Berlins eingeführt werden.
Um die Stadt und Region und einige ihrer zentralen kunst- und architekturhistorischen Fragestellungen kennenzulernen, plant das Programm mehrere Exkursionen zu Themenfeldern wie Ökologien und ästhetische Praktiken. Zudem sollen historische Konzepte der Stadtplanung im ehemaligen Ost- und Westberlin erschlossen werden. Im Spannungsfeld von Gartenlandschaften und Klimawandel werden Besuche vor Ort mit der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW), der Stiftung Preußischer Schlösser und Gärten (SPSG) und dem Staatlichen Museen geplant.
On the occasion of the arrival of the new Art Histories Fellows 2016/17 in October, the team of Art Histories will welcome the scholars to the program and introduce them to the city of Berlin during the Art Histories Welcome Weeks. In cooperation with CAHIM the Fellows will present their research projects. Moreover, we will introduce the Fellows to basic themes of history and art history of Berlin.
Apart from first Fellow presentations, the program plans to visit historical spaces and institutions that connect to questions of ecologies and aesthetic practices, focusing on historical garden and climate change in spaces in Berlin and Potsdam as well as on urban planning in former East and West Berlin in collaboration with the new Fellows of CAHIM. Therefore visits in situ are planned in cooperation with the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW), Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG), and the State museums.

»From Traditional to Contemporary Aesthetic Practices in West Africa, Benin and Togo«
Im Mai 2015 führte das jährliche Travelling Seminar das Programm Art Histories and Aesthetic Practicesnach Benin und Togo. Nach der Reise wurde ein Blog eingerichtet, der sich mit der Kunstgeschichte, Architektur und Kultur von Westafrika beschäftigt. Die ersten Beiträge sind nun online. Der Blog soll kontinuierlich erweitert werden. Bei Interesse, Artikel beizutragen, hilft das Programm gern weiter.
In May 2015, the program Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices went to Benin and Togo for their annual Travelling Seminar. After the trip, a blog was set up that focuses on the history of art, architecture, and culture of West Africa and that is now online with first contributions. The blog project is supposed to be continuously extended. Anybody who would like to contribute is welcome to contact the program.

EUME BERLINER SEMINAR
Nach zwei Einführungswochen in Berlin für die neuen EUME-Fellows beginnt auch wieder das EUME Berliner Seminar. Unter dem Oberthema »Struggle and Survival« werden die Fellows mit ihren Kolleginnen und Kollegen im Wintersemester 2016/17 Fragen politischer Umbrüche, gesellschaftlicher Fragmentierung und der Verarbeitung von Krisen und Rückschlägen diskutieren. In drei Seminarsitzungen wird die gegenwärtige Situation in der Türkei thematisiert.
With the arrival of the new Fellows, the EUME Berliner Seminar will also continue under the overarching theme “Struggle and Survival” in the winter semester 2016/17. The EUME Fellows and other researchers will discuss political upheavals, societal fragmentation, and how crises and setbacks are worked through. The current situation in Turkey will be discussed in three seminar sessions.

Hinter »Global IR« verbirgt sich keine bestimmte Theorie oder Methode, sondern vielmehr der Versuch, den Blick des Faches auf die Welt zu weiten. Die TRAFO-Gastredakteure Felix Anderl, Stefan Kroll, Philip Wallmeier und Antonia Witt arbeiten am Exzellenzcluster »The Formation of Normative Orders« an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt.
The academic discipline of International Relations (IR) should be both international and interested in relations. For much of the discipline’s past, however, neither was truly the case. It has been a field of research with a claim to globality and universality, even though it was dominated and inspired by Western ideas, experiences, and people and was based on a fairly state-centric view of the world.With this blog series we offer a forum to discuss what “Doing Global International Relations” could mean, not only in terms of research frameworks, but also with regard to issues such as career paths and teaching methods. The Summer Academy “Reconfiguring the (Non-)Political. Performing and Narrating Change and Continuity” in Tunis (28 August-9 September 2016) was organized by the Research Network “Re-Configurations. History, Remembrance and Transformation Processes in the Middle East and North Africa” (Philipps-Universität Marburg). It built upon the model established by the research program Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe (EUME) that continues as “Transregional Academies” by the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien.
