Editorial
Vor wenigen Tagen sind die Fellows des Programms Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices mit zahlreichen spannenden Eindrücken von ihrem diesjährigen Travelling Seminar zurückgekehrt. Das Seminar führte sie vom 30. April bis 12. Mai in den Iran und wurde von Hannah Baader und Gerhard Wolf (Programmdirektoren) in Zusammenarbeit mit Combiz Moussavi-Aghdam (Art University Teheran, Art Histories Fellow 2014/15) organisiert.
Die Route ging von Shiraz über Persepolis, Pasargadae und Yazd nach Meybod, Naein und Isfahan und von dort aus weiter über Abyaneh und Kashan nach Teheran und Soltaniyeh.
Das Seminar widmete sich der Architektur, Kunst und Kultur Irans von den Achämeniden bis zur zeitgenössischen Kunstszene. Zum Abschluss der Reise richtete die Art University Tehran ein Seminar aus, bei dem die Fellows und WissenschaftlerInnen der Universität in Teheran ihre Forschungen vorstellten und diskutierten. Auch an anderen iranischen Institutionen, Museen, der Denkmalpflege und Cultural Heritage Foundation, in Galerien sowie mit Künstlern haben sich zahlreiche Möglichkeiten des Austausches ergeben.
Das Travelling Seminar in den Iran schlägt unter anderem einen thematischen Bogen zu der anstehenden Transregionalen Akademie »Modernisms: Concepts, Contexts, and Circulation«, die wir gemeinsam mit dem Deutschen Forum für Kunstgeschichte Paris im Juli in São Paulo durchführen werden, sowie zu unserer letzten Jahrestagung zu »Global Modernisms: Contiguities, Infrastructures and Aesthetics«.
In diesem Zusammenhang möchte ich Sie herzlich zu der diesjährigen Jahrestagung»Making, Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture« einladen. Sie wird von uns und der Max Weber Stiftung gemeinsam mit dem Cluster of Excellence »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« und in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut vom 12. bis 14. Oktober 2016 an der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg stattfinden.

A few days ago, the Fellows of the program Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices returned from this year’s Travelling Seminar with many fascinating impressions. The Seminar took them to Iran from 30 April to 12 May and was organized by the Hannah Baader and Gerhard Wolf (program directors) in collaboration with Combiz Moussavi-Aghdam (Art University Tehran, Art Histories Fellow 2014/15). The route was from Shiraz through Persepolis, Pasargadae, and Yazd to Meybod, Naein, and Isfahan and from there on through Abyaneh and Kashan to Tehran and Soltaniyeh.
The Seminar was devoted to Iran’s architecture, art, and culture from the Achaemenids to the contemporary art scene. At the conclusion of the trip, the Art University Tehran conducted a seminar where the Fellows and researchers from the university in Tehran presented and discussed their research. There were numerous opportunities for exchange at other Iranian institutions, museums, the Monument Preservation and Cultural Heritage Foundation, and galleries and with artists, as well.
The Travelling Seminar in Iran also builds a bridge to the upcoming Transregional Academy »Modernisms: Concepts, Contexts, and Circulation«, which we will carry out with the German Forum for Art History Paris in São Paulo in July, as well as to our previous Annual Conference on »Global Modernisms: Contiguities, Infrastructures and Aesthetics«.
In this context, I would like to cordially invite you to this year’s Annual Conference, »Making, Sustaining, Breaking – The Politics of Heritage and Culture«. It will be organized by us and the Max Weber Foundation, together with the Excellence Cluster »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« and in cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute from 12 to 14 October 2016 at the Ruprecht Karls University Heidelberg.

Performing and Narrating Change and Continuity« wird vom Center for Near and Middle East Studies der Philipps-Universität Marburg in Kooperation mit dem Forschungsprogramm Europa im Nahen Osten – Der Nahe Osten in Europe (EUME) veranstaltet. Sie folgt dem Modell unserer Akademien und ist eingebettet in längerfristige Forschungsschwerpunkte zu den politischen und gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen im Nahen Osten an der Universität Marburg und bei EUME. Sie knüpft an die EUME-Sommerakademie »Conflict and Mobility: Urban Space, Youth and Social Transformations« (2014, Rabat) an.

The Summer Academy »Reconfiguring the (Non-)Political. Performing and Narrating Change and Continuity« will be organized by the Center for Near and Middle East Studies of the Philipps University Marburg in cooperation with Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe (EUME). It follows the model of our academies and is embedded in longer-term research emphases on the political and societal upheavals in the Middle East at the University of Marburg and at EUME. It takes up the thread of the EUME Summer Academy »Conflict and Mobility: Urban Space, Youth and Social Transformations« (2014, Rabat).

Die Jahreskonferenz 2016 wird vom Forum gemeinsam mit dem Cluster of Excellence »Asia and Europe in a Global Context« und der Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute und in Kooperation mit dem Deutschen Archäologischen Institut konzipiert und organisiert.
Die Einführungsvorträge werden von dem Kunsthistoriker und Ikonoklasmusexperten David Freedberg (Director of the Warburg Institute, University of London) sowie dem irakischen Wissenschaftler und Schriftsteller Sinan Antoon (New York University, EUME Fellow 2008/09, Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in 2016/17) gehalten.

Wir freuen uns über die Ankunft von vier weiteren EUME-Fellows im Juni und August, die durch Fellowships der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung und der VolkswagenStiftung/Mellon Foundation in den kommenden Monaten ihre Arbeitsvorhaben verfolgen und zahlreiche Möglichkeiten zur Vernetzung und Diskussion erhalten werden:
Margaret Litvin (EUME Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2016-2018) ist Associate Professor für Arabische und vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der Boston University. Sie ist Autorin des vielbeachteten Buches »Hamlet’s Arab Journey. Shakespeare's Prince and Nasser's Ghost«. In ihrem neuen Projekt, »Another East: Arab Writers, Moscow Dreams« untersucht sie arabisch-russische sowie arabisch-sowjetische literarische und kulturelle Verflechtungen.
Die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Anne-Marie McManus (EUME Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2016/2017) wird an der Publikation ihrer ersten Monographie unter dem Titel »Of Other Languages: Arabic Literature and the Poetics of Regionalism (1956-2011)« arbeiten.
Amir Moosavi (EUME Fellow of the VolkswagenStiftung/Mellon Foundation 2016/2017) ist Spezialist für arabische und persische Literatur. Am Forum wird er an seinem Buchprojekt »Dust That Never Settled: Ideology, Ambivalence, Disenchantment and the Legacy of the Iran-Iraq War in Arabic and Persian Fiction« arbeiten.
Wendy Pearlman (EUME Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung 2016-2018) ist Politikwissenschaftlerin mit einem Schwerpunkt auf gesellschaftliche Bewegungen im Nahen und Mittleren Osten und Autorin von »Violence, Nonviolence, and the Palestinian National Movement«. In Berlin wird sie zu »Syrian Narratives of Revolution, War, and Exile« forschen.
We are happy to announce the arrival of four new EUME Fellows in June and August who due to fellowships of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung and the VolkswagenStiftung/Mellon Foundation will have the opportunity to work on their research projects, join networks and take part in discussions during the coming months:

She is the author of the much-noticed book »Hamlet’s Arab Journey. Shakespeare’s Prince and Nasser’s Ghost«. Am 8. Mai 1945 endete der Zweite Weltkrieg mit Deutschlands Kapitulation. Dieses Datum geht später als »Victory Day« in die Geschichtsbücher ein. Da die Kapitulation allerdings nach russischer Zeitrechnung am 9. Mai 1945 erfolgte, feiern Russland und viele andere Länder der ehemaligen Sowjetunion den »Victory Day« einen Tag später als Westeuropa. Dies hat zur Folge, dass es seit zwei Jahren in der Ukraine sowohl am 8. als auch am 9. Mai Feierlichkeiten zum Kriegsende gibt. Mehr...

ART HISTORIES EXCURSION

Zum Abschluss des Fellowjahres werden die Art Histories Fellows 2015/16 einen zweiteiligen Workshop in München durchführen. Zentrales Thema ist die Kunst- und Architekturgeschichte des Sudan im Ägyptischen Museum München. Gemeinsam mit der Direktorin Sylvia Schoske und verschiedenen Kuratoren des Museums werden die Fellows die Architektur und die mediale Erschließung der Ausstellungsobjekte sowie Aspekte der Sammlungsgeschichte, Erwerbungsphilosophie und museale Präsentation diskutieren. Art Histories Fellow Ahmed Adam (Universität Khartum) wird aus dem Kontext seiner Forschungsprojekte »Objects from Sudan in the Collections of Berlin and Munich« und »The History of Museums in Sudan« berichten. Ein Vortrag zum Naga-Grabungsprojekt im Sudan, das die afrikanischen Grundlagen der ägyptischen Zivilisation erforscht, durch Dietrich Wildung (ehem. Direktor des Ägyptischen Museums Berlin), wird den Workshop abschließen. Bereits am 29. Juni werden die Teilnehmenden am Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI) ihre Forschungsprojekte vorstellen. Den Projektvorstellungen schließt sich ein gemeinsames Lektüre-Seminar mit den StipendiatInnen des ZI an.
To conclude the fellowship year of 2015/16 Hannah Baader and the Art Histories Fellows 2015/16 will conduct a workshop in Munich on June 29-30. The central topic of the workshop in the Egyptian Museum of Munich will be the history of art and architecture of Sudan. Together with the museum’s director Sylvia Schoske and various of its curators, the participants will discuss the architecture and media tools used in the exhibition spaces, as well as aspects of the history of the collection, the philosophy of acquisitions, and the museum’s presentation strategies. Art Histories Fellow Ahmed Adam (Khartoum) will contribute content and aspects based on his research projects »Objects from Sudan in the Collections of Berlin« and »The History of Museums in Sudan«. Dietrich Wildung (former director of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin) will conclude the workshop with a talk on the Naga excavation project in Sudan that aims at revealing the African bases of Egyptian civilization. On June 29, the participants will present and discuss their research projects at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte (ZI), followed by a collective reading seminar with fellows of the ZI.
