On 30 January 2015 the explorative workshop “Ukraine and Eastern Europe from Transregional Perspectives” was held at the Forum to discuss a new initiative, developed by Andrii Portnov, a Ukrainian historian and former Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg. Scholars from Eastern Europe and Eastern Europeanists from Germany, wider Europe and the USA joined specialists from Berlin-Brandenburg as well as representatives of the Wissenschaftskolleg and the Forum to discuss the idea with its initiator. The proposed project intends to generate and disseminate valuable knowledge, transcending a nationally confined area studies approach and putting ‘Ukraine’ into context: historically, politically, sociologically, linguistically, etc. It should bring carefully chosen invited visiting scholars from Ukraine and other Eastern European countries into town, connect them with researchers and professors from Berlin and neighbouring Brandenburg institutions. Seminars and lectures will contribute to the public understanding of the region and offer extra-curricular elements for students; results will be made available digitally to an interested audience from science and politics. As this first meeting in the end of January has shown, there is ample interest and support for the initiative on the scholarly side. Funding for this promising endeavour, however, still remains to be secured.

»Body and Empire«, 24. März
Am 24. März führen Sugata Ray (University of California/Art Histories Fellow 2013/2014) und Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby (University of California) im Rahmen der Art Histories Lectures ein Gespräch über »Body and Empire« in der französischen und indischen Kunst und Kunstgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts.

In the framework of the Art Histories Lecture Sugata Ray (University of California/Art Histories Fellow 2013/2014) and Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby (University of California) will be discussing “Body and Empire” in French and Indian art and art history of the 19th century. Under the title “Of the ‘Effeminate’ Buddha and the Making of an Indian Art History” Sugata Ray will examine how an Indian anti-colonial art historiography developed in the late 19th and early 20th century which evolved in opposition to concepts and imagery of masculinity of the English colonizers, and deal with the contradictions resulting from this opposition. Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby will talk about the aesthetic opposition of the two female bodies of different colors (one naked, one dressed) in Edouard Manet’s “Olympia” which reflects and exposes the problem of the historical situation of female African slaves in Brasil after the abolition of slavery by the French in 1848.

»Longing for Haifa in Haifa«

With the question “Longing for Haifa in Haifa: Exile in the Homeland?”, Refqa Abu-Remaileh (EUME Fellow 2013/2016) explores whether shared experiences of Jews and Palestinians could be a foundation for a joint future. She links insights from her own research on the Palestinian politician, writer and journalist Emile Habibi (1922-1996) with the reflections of Edward Said, Judith Butler, and Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin on exile, language and future. She already presented her ideas in the summer term of 2014 in the framework of the EUME Berliner Seminar at the Forum.
