What is the state of democracy and the rule of law in Europe and how can we shape its future?
The foundational aims and values of the European Union are increasingly questioned by recent developments and crises within Europe and the wider world that require critical and interdisciplinary dialogue. The conference invites scholars and practitioners of law, policy-makers, members of civil society, journalists and everyone interested to come together in Berlin to explore, discuss and develop key questions around the state, the challenges and future of democracy and the rule of Law in Europe, issues such as:
- How can the fundamental aims and values of the European Union – such as justice, freedom, democracy, human rights - be upheld in times of upheaval?
- How do we assess the state of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Europe?
- How can we respond to the rise of anti-democratic movements and arbitrary practices on national, supranational and international levels?
- What are the borderlines of democracy and the rule of law?
- How does the state and future of democracy and the rule of law in the European Union relate to and depend on the developments in some of its member states, other parts of Europe, the wider neighbouring regions and the world?
