International Conference “Areas and Disciplines”

On 18-19 October 2013, in Berlin, the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland are hosting the international conference “Areas and Disciplines: Lessons from Internationalization Initiatives in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Germany.”

Program [PDF]

For several years now scholars of the humanities and social sciences in Germany have been discussing the challenges and opportunities presented by the internationalization of their disciplines. These discussions have been sponsored and promoted by, among others, the German federal government’s Exzellenzinitiative, non-university institutions, and through international cooperation initiated by the Länder, the German Research Foundation, and by other scholarly endowments. But what do we understand by the term “internationalization” and at what stage in the process are we today? Instancing the fields of law and art and philology, experts from Africa, Asia, Europe, America and Australia will discuss the future viability of the humanities in a time of globalization. What can one learn from the various initiatives? What is the relationship of area studies to research in the systematic disciplines? What are the concepts of internationalization upon which they are respectively based?

The conference is the first in an annual series of conferences hosted by the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Stiftung. The event is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and is arranged in cooperation with the Musikinstrumenten-Museum Berlin.

The conference will be held in English.
