Interview with Estela Schindel and Gabriel Gatti on the TRAFO Blog

Across their diversity and geographical dispersion we observe a series of features that suggest an emerging pattern of social disappearances which stay in relation to new contemporary mobilities. We aim to explore this from a transregional perspective between Latin America and Europe – with a focus on Southern, Central, and Eastern Europe – both in terms of its empirical and research implications and on a conceptual-theoretical level.

The goal of this workshop is threefold. We want to 1) explore the possible transnational uses of the category of “social disappearance” for what we consider to be forms of exclusion, precariousness, or invisibility that emerge in relation to global mobilities; 2) contrast and compare the case studies along the research questions in order to identify specificities, commonalities, and possible shared avenues for future research; and 3) facilitate a platform for mutual learning and knowledge production on such emerging figures among researchers working in and about related cases in Europe and Latin America.
