As Europe has been deeply affected by the ongoing migrant exodus from the Middle East, South Asia, and Northern and Sub Saharan Africa, it is crucial to broaden current research frameworks on contemporary migratory patterns. In the wake of these massive population movements and subsequent social transformations, there is a critical need for European scholars to shift their gaze and examine different migration experiences from other parts of the world. To that end, this workshop will discuss developing migration trends in the Western Hemisphere. To advance our understanding of this important topic, migration specialists from Germany (Freie Universität Berlin), Mexico (Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas, Mexico City), and the United States (University of Illinois at Chicago) will participate in the workshop with the objective to elaborate an interdisciplinary transregional research project.

The explorative workshop on “New Migration Patterns in the Western Hemisphere” developed by Stephanie Schütze, professor at the Freie Universität Berlin, was one of the winners of our annual competition for transregional research ideas. It was part of the strategic cooperation between the Forum Transregionale Studien and the Max Weber Stiftung – Deutsche Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland and took place at the Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin from 13 to 14 January 2017.
