Les Printemps berbères: Pour en finir avec un Maghreb arabe?

Speaker: Karima Dirèche (CNRS/Maison Méditerranéenne des sciences de l'Homme), Chair: Rachid Ouaissa (University of Marburg / MECAM)

Online event via ZOOM

In “Les Printemps berbères : Pour en finir avec un Maghreb arabe ?”, Karima Dirèche focuses on the novel Berber expressions and statements in the 2011 Maghreb uprisings in the reflection of new demands for freedoms and the rule of law. By examining the role of Berberism historically considered marginalized in the collective protests and with reference to the 1960s and 1970s, Karima Dirèche examines the growing politicization and resistance of Berbers as an expression of sociocultural and political entanglements in the Maghreb, which have particularly reflected the ethnic and linguistic plurality of Maghrebian societies since 2011.

Karima Dirèche is a historian and director of research at the CNRS. She is the author of three books and more than thirty scientific articles. She has also directed four collective works. As a specialist in the contemporary Maghreb, her work covers sociohistory and critical analysis of Maghrebian historiography in a colonial and postcolonial perspective. Her work focuses on the question of religious minorities in the Maghreb (Catholics, Jews and neo-evangelicals today) and their political and religious controversies; the question of Berber identity in its relationship to politics since independence; the question of the narratives of the Maghreb in the context of the independence; the question of national historical narratives and their contestations in the light of the Islamist and Berberist movements. Her methodological approaches combine the practices of oral history with anthropological investigations in a socio-political analysis. Her latest work is entitled L'Algérie au présent. Entre résistances et changements (2019).
