Qianrui Hu is a PhD student at School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London. For his PhD project, he is looking at how people from Donbas make sense of their ethnic, regional, and Ukrainian national identity in their personal life stories, with an emphasis on how the ongoing war has been reshaping their interpretations of themselves and their sense-making of the above-mentioned identity categories. Currently, he is conducting his fieldwork in Poland and Germany, interviewing people who are originally from Donbas. In the seminar, he will introduce his theoretical and methodological framework of his PhD studies and share some of his initial findings and thoughts out of the fieldwork, in particular regarding the relationship between memory, experience, and temporality in the people's comparison between the initial stage of the war in 2014 and 2022.
Teatime Conversations: A series of open discussions with guest speakers and the research group Prisma Ukraïna: War, Migration, Memory
With this series of conversations led by the research group Prisma Ukraïna: War, Migration, Memory, we offer a research-oriented and participatory discussion of transregional perspectives around topics related to our project and facilitate decentralized forms of academic cooperation and knowledge transfer.
This series considers individual topics centered around one of the following thematic streamlines:
- Streamline 1. Memory at war: Cultural and historical dynamics
- Streamline 2. Global history narratives on societies in crisis
- Streamline 3. The role of scholarship, art, language and culture during times of crisis
By bringing together prominent scholars with the research group’s fellows, the discussion series provides an opportunity for multi-perspective and interdisciplinary academic knowledge exchange between researchers who work on similar issues of conflict, migration and memory studies across various regions and contexts or on issues that are central to the research group, such as collective memory, history, cultural heritage, social justice, migration and forced displacement, among others. Through the talks, we create a platform for networks that may lead to new ideas, questions, and perhaps even to scientific cooperation in the form of publications, research projects and investigations both within and beyond the Prisma Ukraïna program.
