Public Diplomacy in Turbulent Situations: Comparing the US and EU Approaches

Marwa Fekry Abdel Samei is a Lecturer of Political Science at Cairo University. She received her PhD from Northeastern University in 2010. She completed her BA in Political Science and MA in International Relations at Cairo University. Her PhD dissertation, entitled “Public Diplomacy in the Age of Regional Media: Al-Jazeera vs. Al-Hurra”, examined how regional satellite media challenge the way US public diplomacy is conducted in the Arab world. It also examined the factors that contribute to the success or failure of the public diplomacy of the media. Abdel Samei has published articles on media and the Egyptian revolution as well as on Islamists and democratic transition in the Arab world. Her research interests include Arab media, the role of social media in post-Arab revolutionary countries, Islamists and democratization, international relations in the Middle East, and theory of International Relations.
