Zukunftsphilologie: Revisiting the Canons of Textual Scholarship supports research in marginalized and undocumented textual practices and literary cultures with the aim of integrating texts and scholarly traditions from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as well as from Europe itself, by way of a critical recuperation of philology. The program connects research institutes and universities in the field of philology and fosters dialogue among scholars. It was established in 2010 and is a research program of the Forum Transregionale Studien and Freie Universität Berlin.
Born out of numerous seminar series, workshops and conferences, the program’s journal, Philological Encounters, is dedicated to a historical and philosophical critique of philology. The peer-reviewed journal promotes critical and comparative perspectives which include textual scholarship and linguistic research from across the world. Alongside four issues a year, the Philological Encounters Monographs are published as a supplement to the journal.
