Al-Faqih in Modern Times: A Contribution in the History of Thoughts

Muetaz Alkhatib obtained his PhD from Omdurman Islamic University, Sudan, in 2009 with a thesis that was later published under the title “The Textual Critical Approach to Hadith: A Study of the Methods of the Muhaddithin and Usuliyin” (in Arabic; 2011). Prior to coming to Berlin, Alkhatib was Senior Producer of Al-Shariah and Life, a program at Al Jazeera Channel (2004—2012). He was also editor in chief of Islam and Current Affairs, IslamOnline.net from 2004—2009. Alkhatib was a founding member of the “Intellectual Forum for Innovation” (al-Multaqa al-Fikri) that offers a new venue for critical explorations of Islamic thought. He was a visiting Fellow at the ZMO in Berlin and a visiting lecturer at the University of Qatar and the Islamic University of Beirut. He has published ten books and several articles in Arabic. Among these: The Textual Critical Approach to Hadith, The Dilemma of the State between Islamists and Liberals, and Islamic Rage: Deconstruction of Violence.

Al-Faqih in Modern Times: A Contribution in the History of Thoughts

Alkhatib’s project at EUME is titled “The Faqih in Modern Times: A Contribution to a History of Ideas”. The project will seek to historicize Islamic legal thought in the modern state, exploring its workings including the tools it employs.
