Adania Shibli

The Eminence of Reflection

Adania Shibli is a Palestinian academic and writer She earned her PhD from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of East London (UEL) in 2009. Supported by a UEL Fellowship, her PhD research "Visual Terror" explored the visual compositions of the 9/11 attacks compared to major attacks in the "War on Terror", as shaped by British and French television coverage. Shibli worked as a lecturer at the School of Critical Theory and Cultural Studies, University of Nottingham (2005-2009), and was a guest lecturer at the L'École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris in 2008. Alongside her academic work, Shibli has also been writing fiction and narrative essays on visual arts and politics since 1996. She was twice the winner of the Qattan Young Writers' Award-Palestine, for the year 2003 and the year 2001.

The Eminence of Reflection

As a EUME fellow, Shibli will develop her new research project that explores al-Ghazali's proposal on the power of the seen over the seer, as opposed to the often held belief on the power of the seer over the seen as outlined by the camera obscura and panoptical models.
